Hi,
Our daughter is into representational art (think DaVinci or other old masters). She is also interested in science, and wants to combine the two. I can’t seem to find a portfolio or picture gallery for students online - what type of art is emphasized here? She has not delved into computerized art yet, but is gaining strength in figure drawing and loves biology dissections. Opinions?
If you dig around the art school website, you will find portfolios of faculty. There is lots of conceptual art there, lots of mind-bending stuff, but I think some faculty also do representational art. My daughter is going there in the fall and she mostly does representational art, but not “old masters.” She’s also interested in both art and science. I don’t think you’re going to find a good art program that trains students in the art style of another century–to be blunt. If you and your daughter are still interested after looking at the website, I would encourage you to visit. The art school facilities are totally amazing, but there’s definitely a funky conceptual vibe to the place.
Lots of the faculty members have web pages so you can see their work: http://people.art.cfa.cmu.edu/people/faculty
There is a school in Italy that does their art program in the style of the old masters. Look at the Visual Arts thread.
There were some students at my son’s school who were into science/ biology type art. They went to art schools- Cleveland Institute of Art.
Very good school- CIA. Offers biomedical arts degree.
It doesn’t seem like CMU would be a good fit for your D. My S is CFA- ID senior this year.
Thank you so much, all of you for your responses!!! Ironically, her grandfather took classes at CAI in the 50s! I will definitely investigate Carnegie Mellon further, When you say a school in Italy, I am guessing you are referring to the Florence Art Academy. She is lucky to have a representational artist in our family, who also raves about this program and was asked to be a professor there after taking their classes. By the way, she isn’t necessarily looking for last century type representational - just that style of realism. For others reading this thread, her family member also recommended Lyme Institiute as the other best place in the nation for representational. The problem is that neither of these programs will feed the science side of her interests, which I know that Carnegie Mellon would do. .
CMU offers the BXA program- Your daughter should look into the BSA (Bachelor of Science and Arts). She could take both biology and art classes. From what I’ve seen, there is a pretty big emphasis on more ‘technical’ art (especially computerized), but maybe she could tailor her curriculum to more of what she’s interested in- or maybe she’d find an interest in computerized art.
