I am currently in a community college for an associate of engineering. I am planning to transfer to a 4 year college. I would like to know if there is any jobs that would hire someone with a A.S. in engineering, if any. Thank you
Most places require at least a bachelor’s from an ABET accredited program. A significant number of places even prefer a master’s.
Technician jobs are basically what would be available.
There may be some drafting (i.e. CAD) jobs available in addition to the technician jobs. Years ago there used to be more A.S. type jobs available but with all the computer tools available now, those A.S. job kind of mostly dried up.
Depending on the state and the industry, it may be that a union agreement stipulates that all non-hourly employees have a bachelor’s degree. That said, I’ve known guys to join the union as a technician, take evening classes for several years, earn a BS in engineering and become “exempt.” I have seen that go well and have seen it go badly, so I have no advice.
Also, smaller contract houses may not require a degree. I feel advancement is limited even at those places without a BS, but have known one or two people to succeed with an AS or equivalent. Still, if the employer offers tuition assistance, take it.
Rather than wonder about jobs for an A.S. degree, concentrate on getting that BS degree with as high a GPA as possible. Working and going to school is tough on grades, especially when you are trying to move from a 2 year school. Remember that your peers will have had some rigorous engineering classes since at least their sophomore year which makes it tough on transfers. They will have already made inroads into study groups which are almost a necessity to do well.
The money you make at a technician or drafting position compared to the money for degreed engineer will make getting the BS a priority.
