What kind of schedule would fit you best?

Although the most common two types of academic calendars are the semester and the quarter system, some colleges operate on other types of schedules:

Semester schedule: students usually take five courses a semester, each of which can last 14-16 weeks. Prototypical college using it: UMI (although UMI has two summer terms)

Quarter schedule: students usually take four courses a quarter, each of which lasts 10-12 weeks. Prototoypical college using it: UCLA

4-1-4 schedule: similar to the semester calendar, it delays one of the semesters by a month, so that one could take one course right after the holidays, and that session usually lasts around a month. Prototypical college using it: MIT

4-4-1 schedule: rather than to have the short session between two long ones, the short session starts in May. Prototypical college using it: Purdue

Block schedule: students take one course at a time; each block lasts four weeks. Prototypical college using it: Colorado College

Is there a type of college schedule that would fit your learning style better?

The semester system would fit me best, although I have never experienced the other systems.

My school has three summer sessions, and a fall and spring semester.

Trimester(not listed). Because I’m used to it.

Could I get a more in-depth understanding of what this mean since it is my school :P?

Woah, your schedule[/url”>http://www.purdue.edu/registrar/Calendars/Academic%20Calendars/2013_14_Acad.pdf]schedule is trippy. My schedule[/url”>http://www.registrar.usf.edu/enroll/regist/calendt.php]schedule is normal.

the one with the fewest units, with the least coursework and shortest class times. yeah, that one.

The Block schedule sounds the easiest to me. Yeah I might get bored after awhile, but I am positive I would excel in a class if it were the only class I had to worry about throughout the week. It gets rid of the time management rule which I oh so ahbor (I mean for other stuff not for the class itself).
It probably wouldn’t be the best preparation for the real-world though. ;;

I’m on the quarter system and it works really well for me.

Semesters seem like they’d drag to me, but I’d get used to it.

I could see the 4-1-4 or 4-4-1 working for me better than semesters would, because one of the appeals of the quarter system to me is the fact that I only need to put up with a class for ten weeks if I dislike it. That one month class would give me a chance to check out classes I’m not sure I’ll like without it being as bad as if I got stuck for a full semester.

The block schedule sounds interesting. I think it’d work about as well as the quarter system for me, since it’d allow me to focus more on one class.

Overall, either the quarter system or the block schedule would be the best fit for me. Of course, I’m biased towards the quarter system seeing as it’s the only one that I’ve been on.

A semester system would be best for me. Which is pretty much what my school has. My school does have a winter session and two summer sessions. But the winter session is mostly study abroad trips and this GenEds in Yellowstone program the school has.

I have the semester schedule and enjoy it, it is what I am most used to from high school. Don’t have a winter session but has 2 summer sessions, 3 and 8 weeks. Took one 8 week class once, a 3 week would be very quick. The one thing I would change is start a week earlier, I had to take an exam on December 23rd once, hopefully only once.

4-1-4 and 4-4-1 would be okay too, is the month class required and how often is it taken? If you don’t take them there isn’t much difference. Personally I wouldn’t want to take a class over winter break unless it was easy and abroad or something comparably awesome.

Quarter is fine too, though I don’t like how it starts and ends later than semester schools, I’d rather be in school in september than june.

I wouldn’t like a block schedule, I think. It would be nice if I was taking an easy class to have a laid back period, but taking a hard class in a three or four week period would be awful, like taking 4 or 5 hard classes in one semester. And if you get sick or something, one day behind is like a whole week in the semester schedule. I don’t think I could learn as much and would forget the material more.

“Woah, your schedule is trippy. My schedule is normal.”

Yea… I still don’t get it.

Me neither, Purdue’s looks normal to me. Having finals in april is much earlier than I am used to.
