What major should I select

I was originally planning to go into computer sciences. However, taking classes on computer science in high school I realized that it is not right for me and I do not see myself doing it in the future. On the other hand, I love biology and I don;t mind chemistry. However, I don’t like physics. I like things such as nanotechnology and biotechnology. So what majors should I choose in college with my specific liking and the things that I am good at?

I feel your disliking of physics may come out of its having been presented too quickly and/or too strangely. I suggest making sure of your feeling by reading about it in a very elementary textbook or website (such as http://physics.about.com/od/physics101thebasics/p/PhysicsLaws.htm). Everyone, I think, should know basic physics, and every science person must.

Good job for trying something and being flexible about adjusting when it doesn’t quite fit. Keep doing that. For most sciences you don’t have to decide until you are in college- usually not until your second year. It is perfectly ok to apply and enroll as ‘undecided’. Sign up for intro science courses (being aware that the intro courses are often the least interesting /least fun!). Look at the majors and their requirements (you’ll probably want a calc first year as well).

One of the biggest tips? use your advisor well. Do some homework before you meet- look at the science majors that look interesting to you, work out what pre-reqs they have in common, then go in and ask for advice. Repeat frequently. Advisors only have to meet you occasionally, but most are delighted to have an interested, motivated student.

Also, don’t put too much weight on your first impressions: collegekid2 was very negative about her advisor before they ever met (just from reading the bio). Was unimpressed well into the first year, but came to recognize how good the advisor was (both as an advisor and a professor) and was gutted when the advisor was hired away by a more famous university!

Yah I actually took AP Physics. I understood the material just wasn’t of my liking.
