What Makes Bryn Mawr Unique?

Hello! I am a junior in high school right now, but I am looking into colleges now so I am not overwhelmed later on. So far, what I have read about Bryn Mawr seems to be mostly positive, but I have read that a lot of the students are focused mostly, if not only, on work and that they do not have much of a social life. I am not that into parties and do not wish to attend a party school, but I do like to have fun. Are the students too focused on work? Also, what distinguishes this school from the other all women colleges, like Mount Holyoke (My sister attends Mount Holyoke, but I am not sure that I want to go there, because I want to be more independent).

Basically, I just what to know what the students are like, what makes the school unique, and just an overall opinion on the college. Thank you!

Hi scharbonneau7!
I’m currently a senior at Bryn Mawr, and there are definitely lots of fun things to do on campus. We are an academically focused school, but our approach to learning is very holistic, so there are tons of clubs, sports, activities, etc. that students participate in. Bryn Mawrters generally are involved in lots of activities, which are great ways to make friends and relax, whether it be an acapella group, open mic night, or culinary club. We do also have parties on campus, but you won’t find huge parties every weekend like you might at some schools.

Another aspect of our social life, which also pertains to your second question, is our consortium with Haverford, Swarthmore, and UPenn. We can take classes at any of the schools, we can participate in clubs, and you can even major and live at Haverford. This make the social scene that much better, and it also gives us the best of both worlds by having an all women’s college with men on campus and in many classes. And if you ever feel like you want to hang out with guys, you can just hop over to one of the other schools.

Finally, one other thing that makes Bryn Mawr special is our traditions. We have very strong traditions, and they are something that unite every Mawrter that has ever graduated. Being such a diverse crows, the traditions are the only thing that is common to every Bryn Mawr student, and it is the foundation for the community we love.

Hope that helps!

Some students are very focused on work and rarely leave their dorms. Other students are focused on work, but at the same time find time for fun things to do! I find time to go out once or twice a week. There’s rarely a good party at Bryn Mawr, so I head to Swarthmore or go to Philadelphia for fun. Good luck with your college search!

I completely back up what BlusteryDayLover said.

What I love about the space at Bryn Mawr and where it’s located is that it’s so close to the other colleges in our consortium that do have parties regularly. If I want to stay in my room and study on a Saturday night, I can do it without being bothered, but if I want to go out and have a fun time at a party, then I’m 10 minutes away from the nearest party at Haverford. It’s very very easy and I’m very happy that I have the choice to not be in a party environment all the time unlike some bigger/rowdier colleges.

Bryn Mawr has a few campus parties that happen annually, for instance our Halloween party and St. Patrick’s Day Party, as well as a few random parties too, but for the most part, the school goes out of their way to create friendly environments that bring the BMC community together for something unconventional. We have rolling skating in the Campus Center, specialty dinners, concerts, culture shows, and so many other administrative funded events that, to me, are a lot more fun than actual parties.
