Does anyone know of any sites or statistics about the average number of years of training after med school that are required for certain specialties, or the average hours, salaries, pros and cons, etc.? For example, the pluses of choosing obstetrics over geriatrics and the minuses of picking surgical oncology over plastic surgery.

Just search on google. Not too hard to find. Any surg specialty will pay more then most others due to the nature of the work. This goes without saying that you WILL put in long hours during residency easily 80 hours plus extras that aren't on the books. You will also have a longer training by up to 2 years then others. The competition will also be more intense.

It's actually more difficult than you say. I've given up with searching.

It's easier if you search for each speciality by itself. I don't know if there are any websites that have compiled all of the information you are looking for into one convenient place, but there's plenty of websites dedicated to one specialty.

Here are some websites for you to get started. These websites have lists of different specialties you could go into upon graduating from medical school:
http://library.thinkquest.org/15569/car1a.html --> This one lists many medical careers, but not all of them require medical school.

http://www.mutualofomaha.com/provider/glossary.html --> Again, not all listed will require medical school.

Yeah, I'm just looking for a quick way to compare and contrast the different specialties in surgery.

Thanks

I just did a paper on Radiology and Anesthesiology, and they pay really well(if thats what your shooting for, but i would hope there is more intrigue in the Medical field then just money for you), but there is also a intensive Residency. For anesthesiology atleast where i live(Wisconsin) you need 6-8 years of residency. Im sure radiology isn;t quite as long, but for any field your going to be spending some time on it. Good luck with what you decide

Try this: http://www.abms.org/
