My Common App Essay is about a very private family situation that shaped my personality, outlook on life, and ambitions. However, I can’t have my friends review it because it’s not something I should be talking about with most people.
What should I do? I could have my parents read it because they were involved in the actual situation. But I feel I need more opinions for something so important.
A close teacher would be the best option. Teachers are not there to judge, so it’ll be good.
If it’s that private, then do you even want to share it with complete strangers in an Admissions office? The essay is not therapy.
@j_anonymous Yes, I think that might be good. I was really close with my English teacher last year.
@PrimeMeridian Well, I don’t mind talking about it at all. It’s my parents who told me not to tell anyone who we come in normal contact with, but they said I can write about it for college admissions.
So it sounds like it would be difficult for your parents to be detached readers. Identify someone who can be impartial and provide good constructive criticism. If you have no intent to rewrite this draft then skip the second reading and just turn it in.
