What percentage of AU classes are only offered at night?

My daughter has been accepted into American U for fall 2016, and she is deciding between American and Mount Holyoke.
We’ve been told that American has a lot of classes only available at night because of the make up of night time commuter students to full-time students. Would anyone care to share their experience?

We just travelled to AU from the west coast and were there Thursday, my daughter was very impressed with the university.

Only available at night vs. having a night section in addition to a day section is key.

Go here: http://www.american.edu/provost/registrar/schedule/schedule-menu.cfm and pick a subject, and you can see their schedule.

Where I teach, they rarely have undergraduate courses that are only at night, but the graduation requirement courses often have both day and night sections. We have about 50% commuter undergraduate.

Thanks for your response

Not sure what your source was referring to regarding “a lot of classes only available at night because of the make up of night time commuter students to full-time students.”

There are very few part time undergrad students at American University, all of whom would be commuters-- 320 of 7360, or less than 5%. (Source: 2014-15 Common Data Set) Doesn’t seem enough to drive holding more classes at night for that reason.

All I can come up with is that most Juniors and Seniors are technically “commuters,” since on-campus housing is only guaranteed for the first two years. Maybe those students prefer an evening course over an early morning one.

The source is one of my neighbors who sponsored a woman from Tibet to attend AU. He says she needed to take night courses to finish her degree and said it was because some of the classes were only available at night.

Looking through the catalog it looks like some of the classes fill up quickly and maybe this is why she had to take night courses.

The only class my son has had at night, was his Leadership class. You have to apply for the leadership programs so it is not that many students.
