Since Stanford has more grad students than undergrads, I wonder how many of the undergrad classes are taught by TAs. This doesn’t seem to be something you can check on the Common Data Set. Any way to find out? Same question could apply to other schools.
My son is a junior. He has had great classes and teachers. None were taught by grad students. He had a writing course where the TA, almost the co-teacher, was a grad student. Apparently, she was excellent. In most courses the TA–not the prof–is a grad student. The quality has been good but uneven. This is usually of secondary importance. Having said this, I think the strong graduate school of Stanford is a big plus for undergrads. Fo instance, my son had a physics course that was very demanding. The TA was a great and very smart grad student. He will probably be teaching at a leading university in a few years. At a liberal arts college, the TA would be a junior or senior. Very different situation.
When my son was a junior, he was paid by stanford to help some athletes on some classes he took and did well. I could be wrong but I believe that all classes are taught by people who have a ph.d.
