Bookmom, my D applied EAII and was able to interview here in Honolulu last fall with Jim Zielinski. They really hit it off and she was so excited about Beloit. My D's GPA at the end of jr. year was 3.4 (no grade inflation at her school), but in Jan. we were told she was in the top 10% of her class. So we let Jim know, and quickly arranged our trip for the January interview weekend. My understanding is that once you qualify for a Presidential scholarship, the interview is what determines if you receive one and how big it will be. I also understand that there is no "limit" to how many Presidential scholarships are awarded.

The scholarship my D received made Beloit the least expensive of the 4 LACs that admitted her, and Beloit ended up being her first choice, so it was a great result for her and for us. We have older D who just finished 2d yr. at UPS, and we expect both Ds to help finance their education--the bottom line is that each must pay 1/3 of her "net" tuition and fees (after subtracting scholarships).

Izzy, I am relatively new to CC, and because my D had applied to Beloit, I saw your posts. I have been telling my D all about you, because you sound so interesting. I also saw Carolyn's posts (i.e., hoping you would choose Beloit), and when you finally made your decision, I e-mailed her to say how excited I was that our Ds would be attending college with you.

I won't be going out to Beloit for the orientation (my H gets to make that trip), but I look forward to meeting you, Carolyn, and Carolyn's D, sometime in the next four years.

Aw, Mom of Sus, that's really sweet! blushes I hate that I can blush pretty easily, though I say it doesn't show, having Asian skin. (I'm a foreigner in Europe. :D) I also got an LJ, but it's a little spastic. :o Will your husband be wearing a big sticker/hat saying "Dad of Sus"?

bookmom, Beloit was several K more expensive than my other two US LAC's, and I wrote them an email asking if they could revise the finaid packet. And they agreed. :D But even with this additional packet they still weren't the cheapest to attend. One other LAC was and the Canadian universities definitely were. However, I really really really really love the vibe I got from Beloit, due to the LJ and SOI's and everything. becomes an emo(tional) teen ;) It's definitely worth it, I think. :D
I do think the SOI's are already on their summer break, though... I don't know if there are summer SOI's for incomin' freshmen, rising seniors. Hmmm.

It's been several years since I had to wear uniforms, but I do remember being more self-conscious meeting my classmates outside classes then going to free-dress school. Going to school with ratty jeans is sooo much more comfortable than wearing properly ironed jeans outside of school when ppl are used to seeing us in our white polo shirts and dark bottons. (And uniform colors seem universal! At least in Asia...)

Izzy, My D. is really pushing the dress code now that we're down to the last few days. Yesterday she wore a tank top to school --- but kept her Beloit sweatshirt on all day over it (they let seniors wear the sweatshirt of their college). I think she felt pretty rebellious, even if she was hot all day. :)

It will be neat for all of you guys to connect --- Beloit is small enough that you will definitely run into each other all the time. I know that my D. is happy that she has a few people like you and mjb that she feels like she already knows - it will make the first few days less stressful I think.

Bookmom, Earlham is a wonderful school. I will be curious to see what your daughter thinks. As you know, it was at the top of my D's list for many months, before Beloit nudged it aside. :) There are a lot of similarities between Beloit and Earlham, but I would say that Earlham students are a little bit more intense and serious, whereas Beloiters (LOL) tend not to take themselves too seriously. :)

Izzy, I told my H that he needs to wear a big sticker saying "Dad of Sus" so that you will know who he is. He may be wearing the Beloit Snappers minor league baseball cap that we brought back to him from our January trip to campus. It does have a turtle on it, and do I recall correctly that you and Carolyn's D are turtle fans? Me, too. Here in Hawaii, we call them honu (Hawaiian for turtle) and I have a "lucky honu" in my car. At my D's school fair a few weeks ago I had the balloon person make her a balloon turtle, in honor of Beloit.

And Carolyn--this is my daughter's last week in a uniform, and she wanted to know if she could burn it! I suggested donating it to the school instead. I don't expect to ever see her in a uniform again, unless she gets a job that requires one. Her uniform of choice is jeans and t-shirts.

MOS -- Actually, we were in Hawaii last month and Amanda bought a :honu: sticker for her car -- it's right next to the Beloit bumper sticker. She has always loved turtles and pirates, so the fact that she's going to Beloit, where the official mascot is a bucchaneer and the unofficial mascot a turtle, is a kick.

Are you sure we don't have the same daughter? Amanda has already started gathering wood for the bon fire. Frankly, given the amount of "personalization" that she's done to her uniforms, I think the school would reject any offer of donation, so into the flames they'll probably go. :) I did convince her to save one complete uniform that we'll have cleaned and put in a storage box so she can show her kids what she wore in high school some day. She laughed, thinking about how much her kids will pity her.

Haven't checked in for a while--but Beloit is still#1 for my dtr. Truman St was a washout, and we passed on Earlham (broke my toe at Truman and didn't feel like driving 4+ hours to Earlham. DD feels Earlham is a bit too 'granola' for her sight unseen. I visited over 30 yrs ago and just remember that Richmond was bland and the school was small. I am rooting for the U of IL--she will have enough credits to enter as a 2nd semester frosh at least--and we will weekend there next mo to let her get a feel for it, but it is still the backyard-everyone-goes-to-it school here and still enormous. I am leaving it to fate, or rather DD's efforts and the schools' generosity. Nice to have this summer off while she attends the local cmmty college and works on her essays.Apps will start in Sept!

Bookmom, If she gets back up to Beloit in the fall, email me (CZLAW@a0l.com) and I'll be happy to put her in touch with my daughter. My D. was treated very well by the students when she visited, and she's anxious to return the favor.

bookmom, I hope your toe is better now. I fractured one foot then fractured the other 3 months later. I don't think I can fully flex my ankles now... I hope you can wiggle your toes! Toe-wiggling is fun!

Best of luck to your daughter; I hope she'll/she's enjoyin' the time at the community college! And the apps... The essays!

HI again--thanks, Izzy, the Truman toe is better. My daughter plans to visit Beloit again in the fall for another overnight, visit more clases and have a interview before submitting her app. WE tentatively plan to come up COlumbus Day, which is a fall visit day, but in retrospect we 'did' the visit day thing last fall. Perhaps she would get a better sense of campus if she just picked a non-event day for her overnight and interview. Any comments on this idea? thanks!
