What r u guys doing now?

anyone decided to go to beloit yet? what are u guys doing for welcoming the FYI? can any current students students give me sum ideas about the FYI and the orientation?

Libra_sky,
Don't forget to check out the Beloit admitted students message board on their site - it's a good place to ask questions and connect with other students, including some current ones. They also have the schedule up there for the orientation! I'd also suggest going to <a href="http://www.livejournal.com%5B/url%5D">www.livejournal.com</a> and doing an interest search for Beloit College - there is a very actice live journal community of current students and they are great about answering questions.

My daughter will be joining you at Beloit. Congratuations on your choice! Now, we just have to get Izzy on board! (just joking Izzy!)

My S spent three days at Beloit in March and is now trying to reach his decision. He has liked Beloit from the day he set foot on it a year ago and he is measuring each of his other acceptances against his feelings about Beloit...he is making a couple of additional return visits to schools in a week but I'm guessing he selects Beloit!

thanq so much, carolyn, and lantern5.
I still have sum questions about dorm.
It's said that Bushnell is coed by room. What does it mean? Does it mean that a boy and a girl will live in one room???
And what does "substance free" mean?
And what kind of dorm is best for the first-year Intls?

substance-free = no drugs, no cigarettes, no alcohol

coed-by-room = a room with 2 boys next to a room with 2 girls, etc., etc.

coed-by-floor = a floor of boys, a floor of girls, etc., etc.

Libra, you should also know that the bathrooms are co-ed in many of the Beloit dorms. Best bet if that bothers you is to ask for a dorm, like Chapin, where the floors are NOT co-ed by room or, if you're female, opt for the the all female dorm. My daughter did put Bushnell down as her first choice by the way.

Lantern, I am surprised and pleased to hear that your son is still considering Beloit. PM me if he makes the final decision -- we'll have lots to talk about. :)

Libra, By the way, here is the link to the answers my daughter received from current Beloit students when she asked about dorms on the Beloit LiveJournal -- lots of good information in there:
<a href="http://community.livejournal.com/beloit_college/121603.html%5B/url%5D">http://community.livejournal.com/beloit_college/121603.html</a></p>

Hi! I am positive that I am going to Beloit (if not this year then next...I am considering defering for a year to go on a gap year program that I was admitted into in Israel...) I am very excited for Beloit!!!

Marta

Marta!!! Carolyn! Libra_sky! (I still need to know your last name.) lantern5!! waves

Meh, weh, I'm thinking of Beloit vs. Cornell College (with increased scholarship that beats Beloit's...) vs. Knox, buuuut...right now....it's B vs. C though one year credit at Knox is pretty sweet, too...

Either way, I'm just here at home studying for the IB exams and not enjoyin' the Easter break cuz of it. :)

IzzyJ -- my S is making a second round of visits, this week, to Kenyon, Sarah Lawrence and Bard. He's on a plane to Kenyon College right now. Both my wife and I agree that Beloit is still his first choice. Here in Massachusetts, where most people have heard of Kenyon, Sarah Lawrence and Bard but have not heard of Beloit, he gets some funny looks. He doesn't care...he knows what he likes. He has really enjoyed both of his visits there and thinks that Beloit is the place where he'll learn the most, fit in best and have the most fun. Unless he has an epiphany this week, I think he's heading to Beloit on August 18th. I have read a lot about Knox...it also sounds like a great school, as does Cornell College. Good luck with your decision. Don't study too hard.

Lantern5 -- my son's two best friends at Beloit are from Mass.

Two of my S's friends from HS are freshmen at Beloit this year and both love it...

lantern, thanks for the wishes. I hope I haven't popped a vein in my brain somewhere. :)

Does anybody know what public transportation is like in Beloit, regarding taxis, buses, shuttles, etc? My mom (and I, I suppose upon more thought) is worried about, considering my sister's in Flint, Michigian and taxis are so rare they give you a flat fee to drive you the airport or elsewhere. So rare my parents acquiesced when my sister brought a car without telling them.

Transportation to the airport (Chicago -- O'Hare) is very easy. There is regular airport bus service about every 1.5 hours from near the college. On school holiday weekends, vacations, etc., the school provides a free shuttle from the campus to the airport bus stop. There is free shuttle transportation to movies and local stores. I don't know much about locl bus or taxi service, but i do know students with cars are very generous about providing rides. If my California boy car culture son can get along without a car as he has for two years, you needn't worry about transportation in and around Beloit.

Thanks, lalady! Hopefully my ma can rest easier after I tell her this. :)

Beloit increased their financial aid by $2,500 so it's definitely even more of a top contender! wiggles

Izzy, I am so happy to hear this news --- hope it will all become clear to you soon.

By the way, you can find the bus schedule for the Van Gilder bus service which goes from Beloit to Chicago (including both airports), Madison, Milwaukee, on the Beloit website. There are also two taxi services in town and some bus service. Additionally, Beloit runs a regular shuttle bus (free) around town on Wednesday nights and some weekend nights so you can do your shopping. My husband and D. also asked about the necessity of a car and were told by several students and parents that one is not really necessary (indeed, not recommended because there is limited parking on campus) - you can get where you need to go by one of these methods or easily get a ride from someone who does have a car anywhere you would need to go. Within walking distance of campus, by the way, are a grocery store, a pharmacy, and some small shops and restaurants. The town of Beloit has the largest Wal-Mart in Wisconsin, in Janesville and Rockville there are also some large malls with just about every major store brand you can think of.

Arrgggggg. My daughter is undecided between Beloit and Kalamazoo. Are there any Beloit parents whose child considered Kalamazoo? I've been to the Kalamazoo forum but would appreciate an appraisal from a Beloit-centric viewpoint-if that's possible.

kingsrook, I just made my choice today to choose Beloit over Cornell College and Knox. (YAY!!!)

Here's a link to a parent's pov on Beloit. No comparisons to Kzoo, but it'll hopefully help. <a href="http://admissionsadvice.mywowbb.com/forum7/311.html%5B/url%5D">http://admissionsadvice.mywowbb.com/forum7/311.html</a>

As to why Beloit, I'll say straight off I wasn't able to visit any campus and thus had to rely on viewbooks, chatting with current students, incoming students and their Livejournals. (<a href="http://www.livejournal.com%5B/url%5D">www.livejournal.com</a> and search under "interest" for the college you want. At least on the Beloit forum, they're helpful to incoming questions) I found a student I really liked, with academics that seemed intriguing. While not as diverse as Knox, internationally, I wasn't able to click so much with Knox. Did you daughter overnight at Kzoo and Beloit? Did you find people she could talk to easily if her hosts weren't that friendly or her type?

Best of luck to your daughter!

IzzyJ, congats on a wise choice.

lalady, curtsies

Grins

Thank you!!!! I'm totally psyched!
