If I was born in nigeria and lived there my whole life, and consider myself NIGERIAN (both my parents have lived in NIGERIA their whole lives also) but I am actually Chinese and also are both my parents, what am is my race. Pls lmk opinions as I am sending in today… also if I put black can I say that officially and without trouble? Thanks
Colleges lean on the Census definition: “Black or African American – A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.”
If you’re living in Nigeria now, adcoms will see that. If you offer some unique perspective that they want, you can add that in Addl Info or possibly an essay. But as an international, chances are harder, to begin with.
Race is different from nationality/citizenship. You are an Asian from Nigeria.
@smahrf Your Nationality is Nigerian, but you will still be seen as Asian for college admissions purposes A Nigerian national could be of any racial background. So being a Nigerian does not necessarily make someone Black.
Hi,
I completely agree with @Groundwork2022.
Your race is Asian and nationality is Nigerian.
Good luck!!
More importantly, you will be considered international for admissions purposes, which makes ones chances slimmer, regardless of race.
If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, the answer is “international student”, which means that it is more difficult to get admission, financial aid, and scholarships at most US universities.
You do not consider yourself a native Nigerian. If you are applying to an Ivy one would hope you are smart enough to see how ridiculous this sounds. Expats live everywhere. Often in gated enclaves among similar groups in parts of Africa.
Your service projects
" went to a local African village twice a year to donate the supplies in an attempt to reduce the deaths
- Went to a local state school in africa everysingle year to donate solar lamp"
Are indicative of your situation. Are you even Nigerian by nationality? That isn't a given.
Actually, Nigeria permits birth citizenship. And they permit dual citizenship. Race is a separate issue.
Nigeria permits birth citizenship<<<<<<<<<<
With no caveats? It was not clear to me.
But this is for the college app.
Where OP is deciding if he is a black Nigerian.
No. The OP was asking about race. The application asks about citizenship on a separate line, which is a question not open to interpretation. So back to my earlier point, as there is no indication that the OP is a US dual national, s/he can have any other citizenship in the world, and be a member of the Shi’ar race, it does not matter - the international antihook trumps all. For all intents and purposes, the URM question is moot here.
As a fellow Nigerian, your race is Asian but your nationality is Nigerian.
http://www.nigeria-law.org/ConstitutionOfTheFederalRepublicOfNigeria.htm#Chapter_3 says that birth within Nigeria after the date of independence (the 1st day of October 1960) confers citizenship if “either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria”.
Nigeria, just as the USA, has different ethnic subcultures. Being American nor Nigerian is a race or ethnicity. It’s a question of legal citizenship and the rights that confers. Also as an international applicant it is viewed under a different protocol to domestic applicants.
