Visited Alfred U with soon to be high school senior D and she loved the endless opportunities to do hands on work in engineering and art (her two loves). But she wonders about life as a student there. While the remote location was a bit of an issue she thought the environment was beautiful. Honesty, the biggest turn off was the freshmen dorm we visited, which reminded her of being in a hospital (very institutional and tight). Course we were there when almost no students were on campus. Any AU students, parents, or alum out there who can share what it’s like to be there? Any intel greatly appreciated.
I’d love to hear from some Alfred students or parents too.
Hi, I just discovered Alfred and do not have any inside intel. However, I did go to their online session at the NACAC virtual NE college fair yesterday and got to chat one on one with the admissions counselor. This organization (search it) seems to do these virtual fairs periodically, so I bet you could find another one that hopefully Alfred will be at, and you could have the same opportunity (there is one Oct 3 I see) to ask specific questions.
The counselor was super helpful and I came away very impressed, it is now on our list!
Thank you!
granted I attended over 20 yrs ago - but I think things have only gotten better now that there is no greek life. I was an art student and life revolved around the studio, classmates and art happenings. There were plenty of opportunities to get out of Alfred and now it appears they have an even more active presence within the contemporary art space. It’s a wonderful education, I cherish my college years! The cross-over between different schools was always easy and welcome.
My daughter will be attending for the fall 2022. I hope that she, too, finds her voice at Alfred.
Dorms were always pretty basic… but the suites were nice and the Brick is beautiful. However, living off campus was the way to go while I was there. Not sure if Juniors can live off campus anymore… I think it’s just Seniors now.
My son and I toured in the fall. Alfred was very beautiful, campus was clean, nice, picturesque. Quite small…it seemed as if it is one main street and that is it. The setting is gorgeous. It seemed as if it has incredible opportunities for arts students or other majors that want to dabble in arts, sounded very common. This doesn’t describe my son, unfortunately, and he decided that the setting was too remote for him. The students seemed happy and there were some impressive things the guide mentioned about inclusivity such as it is the second oldest coed college in the US and one of the earliest 19th century schools to accept Native American and Black students, there is a monument to this front and center in campus.
We looked in a dorm, it was normal. To me 99% of college dorm rooms look the same.
