What’s your style of vacation?

I’ve tried them all. That’s how I know they are inferior to ice cream.

JK. Again, different strokes.

I will agree with soft serve and frozen yogurt. I spent two summers working at a Dairy Queen and had my fill for life! But a top notch rich frozen custard…

Ice cream talk always gets the CC blood rising…

Actually, I prefer to drink my ice cream:

The Chambord Hummer

1 oz Chambord® raspberry liqueur
1 oz rum
2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Blend Chambord, rum, and ice cream in blender on low-med for one minute. Garnish w/ fresh raspberries.

This is on topic as ice cream drinks improve any type of vacation.

Ok…my vacations…I really don’t want to cook. It’s a vacation after all. And everywhere I go, I try dessert. I had two really delicious ones on my recent vacation. Key lime pie that had some sorbet with it. It was like two desserts in one. And it was so huge, I actually couldn’t finish it.

And a second cheesecake that was absolutely fabulous also. Had berries on top. It was fabulous also. I ate most of that one…and had the rest for breakfast…it had a few food groups, right?

That’s about the best thing I have heard of in ages. Can just imagine it on a Valley evening! Once I made a Kahlua mix in home made ice cream that was to die for.

We once finished off a summer party by setting out lots of small cups of vanilla ice cream and all of our flavored liqueurs- I think there were at least eight, maybe ten bottles. Everyone could try whatever they liked as toppings.

Chambord poured over lemon ice is pretty darn good.

I preferred the cherry dip cone when I was a little girl. Have never been able to find them as an adult.. Plus, black walnut ice cream is hard to come by also.

Cherry dip was my favorite too, but haven’t seen it (or looked for it) in ages. Now I want one…

How many weeks do you spend there? Do you rent or own? Very curious because we have just started spending the winters away. How did you choose your resort ?

The AZ house is our primary home. We have lived in this community for eight years (after 16 years in Scottsdale where we raised our son). We bought the Maine cabin in 2021, so this will be our third summer there. We spend 7 months in AZ, 5 in Maine. Between these two places, we feel like we’re on vacation year-round.

I’m with you, I think. I like my stuff - my bed, my pillow. Packing makes me anxious, as I hate trying to figure out what to bring and not over/under pack. I have a few places on my travel bucket list that I want to do over the next few years (Europe/Italy - open to a river cruise, Hawaii) but after that, I hope to convince H to buy a second home on the coast, and that will become our vacation in our later years. I am very picky about hotels & rental homes, so that always ramps up my travel anxiety.

That said, we try and do a family vacation each year or every other year, with our daughters and their spouses/SO’s. This year we went to NYC for Thanksgiving week (we’ve done NYC over the holidays many times throughout their childhood - I grew up nearby and am very comfortable in NYC). Now that we’re empty nesters, we’ve also done a couple of cruises on the higher end lines and enjoy those because we’re only unpacking once and everything you need is there, plus we can pick unpopular weeks and not be inundated with kids & crowds.

We’ve done Disney many times when the kids were young, and I will take a hard pass on going there again any time soon. I’m not interested in getting up before dawn to run to popular rides, nor am I interested in navigating fast passes or lightning lines. Not my idea of a relaxing vacation.

5-6 years ago, we did a driving vacation along the PCH from the Seattle area to San Francisco. We stopped along the way in some of the small costal towns and walked the beaches (I love the Pacific coast!), went to a couple of museums and took our time getting to San Francisco. I liked that trip except for having to pack and unpack at each stop.

No camping for me, ever. No desire to cook on vacation either.

Now when I say “we cook” on vacation - well, it’s a family vacation or at least more than H and I. So the way it works for us is we have breakfast and dinner largely together. Anything in-between is on your own. We take turns for those two meals so it’s not like at home where I cook EVERY meal I’m home for. And we also go out for a couple of meals or get local freshly baked that morning baked goods for breakfast.

I personally would get tired of eating out twice a day I think. But IRL we don’t eat out much either.

I just got back from a great vacation. We didn’t eat out three meals a day…but definitely one. There were so many wonderful and varied places to choose from(plus we did some driving around the state…) so our main meal was often a late lunch/early dinner. We did go out to breakfast to a favorite place the first day we arrived.

The cooking would bother me…but the cleaning up would bother me even more!!

We spent 47 days in a hotel in Dublin in 2018 (business trip) where we had to eat out three times a day. Never again.

Ever since I’ve been married (20+ years) our yearly vacation has been w/hub’s family at the (same) beach. It’s a really nice bonding time (everyone rotates cooking one dinner) and I enjoy it. But using the analysis of this thread, it’s not the ideal vacation for me, lol.

I like to do different things, see different places, be out in nature, be active (hiking, walking through the woods, etc.). Glad to read here how others feel the same.

I’ve tried suggesting departing from beach/pool lounging a few times on the family vacays (and have gone w/my own kids while there to a few local historical sites, on short hikes) - ha, zero interest from anyone else. The vibe is for sure is ‘lounge on the beach, chat, drink, and snack.’

Nothing wrong with that at all and I admire hub’s family togetherness. However, I’m super excited for this next stage of life where I get to have more involvement in the vacation journeys for myself and immediate family!!

My one complaint about our sailing vacations is that I still have to plan, cook meals. My husband does the clean up. Our last trip with our kids and their partners we made a meal and clean schedule. I joke with my husband that he is lucky he has a partner who will cook for the same price as a stay in a luxury resort.
