Do you need to be greater than the 75th percentile at the school, or do you just need to be above average?
If the school has a minimum cutoff for SAT’s it would be published on their website. Most schools are holistic in admissions and consider a wide range of things.
For example, a 1600 does no make any top 100 college a safety.
Other factors being equal (but they never are, so no guarantee), 75th is likely a decent low end for safety.
You cannot go by scores alone if the college has an admission rate 30% or below, and if it’s 20% or below regardless of your scores compared to top 25% it’s a reach for everyone.
A safety is generally defined as a college for which your chances for admission are high. It typically is one in which you are top 25% both test scores and GPA, has a better than 50% admission rate, is not an out-of-state public university for which higher than shown test scores and GPA may be needed by non-residents, and you are not applying for a major (such as engineering or business) for which better grades and test scores than average for the college are needed. Moreover, the ideal safety is one with rolling admissions, or to which you have applied early action, so you can get a decision before or by mid-December, and therefore know you are admitted to at least one college when applying and waiting for others.
