What school supplies should I bring to college?

I know a lot of people are discussing dorm things, but what academic supplies should I be bringing? I saved some of my notebooks with notes from last year so I can reference them, along with a bunch of worksheets (for example, I’m taking calc 1 again in college bc I opted out of the AP Calc AB test, so I saved all of my packets from that)

I have a planner, iClicker, a good calculator, some blank notebooks, my laptop (do most professors allow these for notes, btw?), pencils, pens, all of the basic stuff, but is there anything else I should be bringing or getting so that I’m prepared for my classes?

Thanks!

My kids also brought a highlighters, folders, a good eraser, tape, stapler/staples, paper clips, a pair of scissors, and sharpies. Keep in mind that if you find you need something you can pick it up at the bookstore or order from Amazon.

Ruler dictiinary

Accidental post above when I was correcting. Ruler, dictionary, eraser, as additions. Good deals are available at Office Depot and Dollar Tree. Unless you are going to really rural Wyoming, you should be within walking distance of were you will live. I only got major bargains at the college bookstore because they are very expensive for school supplies.so

FWIW my kids used online dictionary/thesaurus at college. But yes, they brought a ruler which I did not include on my list.

My daughter carries a re-fillable water bottle everywhere, as do many other students on her campus. She also now carries one of those portable phone chargers, so if her cell phone battery goes out she can still plug it in and make calls or texts while walking around or waiting for a campus shuttle.

A GOOD backpack! One that won’t fall apart and has as many organizer pockets and the like as you think you’ll need, especially if you are not living on campus or will be far from your dorm all day.

I second the phone/USB power bank. I have a combo wall charger / power bank which I love, because then if I’m gonna be out for hours or staying at a friend’s house I only have to carry one thing around (the combo unit) instead of two (the power bank and a separate wall charger). It is called the Anker Powercore Fusion and while it isn’t cheap I found it to be worth it. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Portable-Capacity-Technology/dp/B01K702S66/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1502400897&sr=8-2&keywords=powercore+fusion+5000&linkCode=ll1&tag=this028a-20&linkId=636a4fef5740df750c939fe86480c68d

A couple of flash drives, and definitely a stapler. One of my son’s professors requires that everything turned in on paper be staples.

You might want to bring a printer, depending on how your school is. GMU doesn’t have free public ones, so you could be saving time, effort, and $ by having one in your room.

Noise blocking headphone come in handy for creating a quiet zone anywhere. Any batteries you need. A little loose note book paper. Post its and post it flags. A wall calendar or weekly schedule to hang up, maybe as white board and markers.

I’m just listing things as they come to my head:

(1) A laptop that you can take notes on, write essays and view powerpoints with, and watch YouTube/Netflix. Make sure it’s a good laptop.
(2) Headphones. I like to study blasting my music, but whenever I’m in a public space, I use headphones to cancel out noise around me.
(3) Pens. I like using different colored pens whenever I take notes (e.g. green for important, purple for formulas). It helps me remember important information for an exam or essay.
(4) Pencils and erasers. If you’re in a class like chemistry, physics, or calculus, don’t use pen to solve problems. If you make a mistake in solving a problem, you can’t erase it.
(5) Flash drives. BACK EVERYTHING UP. You don’t know when you’ll lose all of your information on your laptop, so be prepared.
(6) A wall calendar or some organizer where you can keep track of events going on in class.
(7) A ruler, dictionary, and thesaurus
(8) Stapler, staples, and staple remover
(9) Lots of filler paper. You mentioned you were taking Calc 1. You’re gonna need paper for notes, HW problems, and practice problems from the book.
(10) A good backpack. Mine makes me look like a turtle based on the amount of stuff I cram into it: three binders, a laptop with charger, markers, lab jacket, phone charger. The more stuff it can fit without exploding, the better off you’ll be.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thank you all so so much, every thing here was so helpful
