What Schools Are Reputable for Meteorology?

I am a junior now in high school, and I was wondering of some good universities for atmospheric science/meteorology. I have a solid GPA, 3.8 GPA unweighted, and 4.6 weighted. I usually get A's in science and math, and do have an interest in those subjects. I am in the IB program as well. Any ideas?

How much can you afford? What’s your home state?
For undergrads, Valpraiso University is one of the best meteorology schools out there.

If you’re looking into research universities Penn State is generally thought to have the best program. University of Oklahoma is also great, particularly if you’re interested in severe weather meteorology. Many faculty at both OU and PSU received their doctorates from Florida State, so I’d imagine it’s also excellent.

A friend of mine goes to PSU and loves it.

Dallas Raines sometimes teaches meteorology classes at CSUN. He got his degree in meteorology from Florida State…looks like a prominent program.

Penn State, University of Washington, UOklahoma

Penn State

University of Miami

I think it depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a meteorologist for a tv station, you rarely need more than a BS in meteorology, sometimes coupled with a communications degree. The complete list of undergraduate programs can be found in the link below.

If you want to conduct meteorological research, you have considerably more options. You’d need a PhD in meteorology, physical oceanography, or atmospheric science, and those programs accept students from many different backgrounds – math, physics, earth science, etc.

PSU, Wisconsin, Oklahoma.

[UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences](http://www.aos.wisc.edu/)

S1’s friend majored in Meteorology at NCSU. He’s now the a.m. news meteorologist at a CBS affiliate in CA.

I’ve been told by several current Meteorologists that Penn State/Oklahoma/Florida State are like the ‘big three’ of Meteorology. I’ve also been told that Mississippi State and NC State are pretty good as well.
