What schools are you waiting for before you decide on UMD?

Son accepted to Rutgers, NJIT(honors program) (< both in state schools), UMD(scholars program), UDel, Drexel. Disappointed with Rutgers being our state school not offering any scholarship and now reading this forum thinking UMD will be similar. Right now UDel is our top choice for the school program, feel while on campus and scholarships offered.

When did you find out you won full B/K at UMD?

confusedmama - I got my full B/K letter yesterday. It was written and mailed on 3/15.

I’m waiting for Syracuse, UGA, Brandeis and GWU. Accepted at American, Binghamton.
Not interested anymore in Charleston and Hofstra.
Will be decided in a couple of weeks.

confused, i got mine yesterday as well.
mustang did you go to the b/k reception/ did your interview seem to go well?

wow, colormaker…What a variety!!!

Astromom, I didn’t think I was going to get into UMD, Bing or American, so I needed to expand the selection. And of course, money is a factor too, will see what happens, decision time is around the corner!

can anybody answer as to the likelihood of getting into an Ivy if one has already received the Banneker Key? Is it a similar difficulty level?

My pure stats seem to be lower than others getting B/K…although my interview did go very well. People at my school with higher pure stats didn’t even get invites. You’d think that at a large university like MD, the focus would be mostly on stats(I’ve worked a LOT on the EC parts of my app)

I know that MD is a GREAT school, especially with the honors college, and I see the great practical aspect of it, but in looking at schools its not what I was looking for at all. I am confident I’ll be happy wherever I end up, but in all honestly I’d rather be somewhere that’s not 15 mins from home(my HIGH SCHOOL is 40 mins away!!!)

however, at this point its looking highly likely that ill go to md

the selection process for B/K is very different than the admissions selection process for Ivy League and other top universities. Nothing is guaranteed or easily predicted. For instance, I know someone who was awarded full B/K and was rejected EA at Georgetown, and I know someone who wasn’t offered B/K at all and has already been accepted to Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. So it really depends on the situation, and you can’t predict the outcome of one based on the other.

xogenxo…the wanting to avoid going to college where lots of your classmates go is a common theme for everyone (applied to my 2…that’s one of the reasons they are at UMD!)

Anyway, it seems like although you might initially hang out with people you know from high school, but you can “break away” from them at any time; DD’s have met people that had h.s. connections with someone else they knew…now are friends, and the middle person is not in the picture. College is a perfect time to “reinvent” yourself (ha, hopefully for the better)…and UMD’s size allows you to be your own person, and not HAVE to be reminded of h.s. because of the people you are around. Best wishes to you!

APmom…one of the the reasons why I am very interested in going to UMD is because it is so far from California. I am worried that because so many students are from Maryland it might be hard meeting people. Also do a lot of the students go home on weekends and breaks? Because of $ I will only be able to go one once a year and I dont want to be stuck on an empty campus.

The only weekend it seems like almost all Maryland people go home is Labor Day weekend (which makes no sense), since it’s so close to the beginning it might be a bit discouraging but is in NO WAY a common thing.
There are people who go home every weekend, but they very rarely are the type of people who have many friends on campus. (Unless they’re going home to work. That happens occasionally), but usually people won’t even know who’s from Maryland. People will stay friends with their best friends sometimes, but that’s about the extent of it. Everyone branches out, and most people want to be rid of high school.

You will have to have somewhere to go for Thanksgiving and Spring Break though, unless you get a South Campus dorm.

My son’s shortlist for Computer Engineering:

1) UMD
2) UDEL
3) Northeastern
4) UCONN

My son is favoring UMD and UDEL. The Honors program at UMD appears to be a cut above the rest.

Astrophysicsmom…you appear to be quite impressed with the engineering program at UMD. What do you feel are the strong points of the program and why would you recommend?

My son has cut his choices down to four:

UMD
Tulane
U of Toronto
U of Washington

Because of the distances involved, we’ve only visited Maryland of the four until he got his acceptances, though I’ve been to both Tulane and Toronto in years past. So, in April, we’ll be doing some heavy traveling.

Toronto is by far the lowest cost, as he’s a Canadian citizen, but he’ll go to the one that suits him best (after scholarships, the other three are very close in cost). Maryland would be a good fit as he’s been accepted into Bioengineering and into the Scholars program, but I think he’d do well at all of them. It’s likely another month until he makes his decision.

I think weekends will be good, with lots of other students around.there’re thousands of OOS students that won’t even have the option of taking off most weekends, my D included, from Mass. (she is closing in on her decision). Did you ever make your visit?
