My son's GC here in CA told them during counseling session last week that the CA cut-off this year is 217.

In other words, if you live in Massachusetts or Maryland, you lose.

If that list is for the cutoff that was announced last Sept 2005 then the Alabama number is wrong. The cutoff for Alabama last sept was 212, not 210. AL goes up every year.

How does your GC know this already? Did she mean the cutoff for last fall was 217????

I have a question. Do NM kids get recruited by schools that they don't put down as their choices???

I know that there is an old list of schools that give generous merit to NM but I think it needs updating!

jlauer95, I don't know how he knows (or even if he was telling them a fact or a conjecture!), but he told them it was 217 for them this year (that is, for current juniors who took the PSAT in fall 2005).

Figures...DS score was 215! Gak! [lol]
CA,216,1869,4338::::216,1913,4509,

NO ONE knows what the cut-offs will be for current juniors yet. The numbers haven't been calculated & won't be until later this year, which is why they don't send out the NMSF packets until fall of senior year. Students "on the bubble" have to just sit tight & wait to see how things will turn out. This is what the GC told us last spring when our kid was a NMSF-hopeful "on the bubble."

OK, in retrospect I probably should have phrased what I said differently: S reported that GC told them the CA cut-off was 217; what he actually heard may have been more along the lines of "...if your score is 217 or above, you may be a SF based on previous years" or something like that -- and only the number stuck in S's head! SORRY for any confusion or incorrect reportage: I do strive for accuracy. :)

My son just finished his first year at McGill (technically his second as he received advance placement) -but his first in terms of actually being there.
My son and my husband and I are thoroughly satisfied with McGill-although, I have to warn you that the grading is tough. Very tough.
But in many respects the challange is welcomed.
Good luck to you-
I will be back on the Juniors forum next year as our daughter is just competeing her Sophomore year of HS.

Does anyone have the guidebook from the PSAT that has the list of participating universities? Can they scan in the page? I've never seen the list. I've only seen the list from a thread and that list is old.

The thing is--amounts of NM scholarships can vary WIDELY. The smallest award from a U could be as low as a one-time award of $250-500, while the highest could be a full-ride with tuition, room, board, books & other expenses for 4 years. Most awards are somewhere in between & more like $1000-2500 for one or four years. There are several schools that offer 1/2 tuition for NMFs as well. Here are two threads on schools known for good merit aid:

Here's an article about merit aid in Us for thought as well.
