If you’re coming to Amherst, tell us which schools you chose over Amherst. Or if you’re turning Amherst down for another school, what school is that?

I chose Amherst over Duke, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, BU, Puget Sound Honors, Reed (this one hurt quite a bit…), and UW Honors. So excited to move to Massachusetts :’)

I chose Amherst over Columbia, Dartmouth, Williams, and Wesleyan.

Columbia:
I did really want to go to Columbia at all. I just applied because admissions told me I would get in.

Williams:
Too isolated geographically and did not appear to place as much emphasis on student body diversity as Amherst.

Dartmouth:
Ended up being my 2nd choice. Hanover’s terrible winters combined with a sprawled out campus were turn-offs. I did not care for the mental image of trudging through the snow.

Wesleyan: I just applied because there wasn’t any app supplement. Never really wanted to go. A sort of safety.

Chose Amherst over Vanderbilt! Vandy is an amazing school, but I knew I couldn’t turn Amherst down…

Over Wellesley and Kenyon (was not really ever considering this one).

D chose Dartmouth over Amherst. When she spent an overnight at Amherst, she was turned off by the heavy drinking and seeing one of the freshman girls throwing up all over the dorm. Despite Dartmouth’s party reputation, she saw none of that there. Maybe it was just bad timing at Amherst, but she saw it as a bad omen.
