I'm not asking for schools because I have not done my research. But I want to know what are reach and target schools I should look at. Could you guys help me out because I'm overwhelmed by choices and brand named schools right now.

Stats: 2190 SAT, 4.3 gpa weighted, 4.0 unweighted, 2nd in class of 430, 7 ap exams total so far (7 to come) and I've received 4 5s and 3 4s with 3 tests self studied. Will take sat 2 USH, chem and math ii

Extras: I know I can show colleges that I'm not just numbers. I am the interact district governor of my area, and junior interact president at my school. Interact is by far the biggest club on campus. I do speech and debate as mun secretary and I have won best delegate twice. I am varsity on track and xc, nothing pro but I have shown commitment. Volunteer work at stanford VA hospital for 4 weeks (nothing notable) and other things. Youth and gov, blah blah

Summer: traveled to nicaragua to teach english and explore culture for 3 weeks with global glimpse on scholarship. Norcal world affairs council student member. California boys state attendee

Skills: passionate and skilled writer. Good with history and science and math as well. Very social and well liked by teachers and school staff.

Strengths: above, and I have 2 teachers that I have a very personal relationship with. Dinners, programs, clubs, are things I know them through. We talk at least 5 hours a week in school and I get calls over the summer. I've known these teachers for 4 years now and they specialize in international relations and math (calc). They have begun writing rec letters. I have 2 other teachers that will write as well that like me a lot, but aren't anywhere as close to me as the other 2.

College goal: to travel, explore the east coast. To meet new people and find my passion. Plan is to major in finance or business marketting, etc. Minor in English or international relations.
Thanks guys
:))

In your other thread I gave you a link to some undergrad business listings for you to browse

Usually colleges want 2 letters from teachers and one from the school counselor. Do not give them more unless there is a very compelling reason like you did a special activity they supervised. You want to keep the focus on the important recs and not dilute it by just okay ones, also you want to be considerate you don’t lard your application with a bunch of unnecessary stuff for admissions to read.

fyi, UCs and CSU don’t ask for letters at all.

@BrownParent saving the day again oh so you only recommending sending 2 to privates?

Are you instate for Calif? If not, which state is your home state?

What is your budget? how much will your family pay each year?

Your financial situation will largely determine where you should apply and will determine which schools are reach, match and safeties for you.

If you have an unaffordable EFC, then your reaches will be schools that have competitive large merit. If you have an affordable EFC or low EFC, then your reaches will be schools that meet full need…often the hardest to get into.

Probably 10-15,000 a year at most for at least my freshman year, maybe more my sophomore year. Because I’m not counting my aunts’ income here, then our family income comes to a gross amount of around 60, 000 for the last 2 years. @mom2collegekids I live in california. The thing is my parents really want me to get into the school that will secure my future in a better manner no matter the cost, so they want to take out a loan on the house. In that case we are looking at more like 48,000 a year at best, but that’s my last resort.

My eyes always widen when I read stuff like, “…the school that will secure my future in a better manner no matter the cost…” Your parents have about an $850K mortgage with a gross income of $60K, and they think it prudent to take out an additional $150K+ (at that ATM you have next to your pool) to finance your education at a name-brand private? And you also mention elsewhere that the $60K is one of their better income years out of the last five years. And you live in California, with arguably the best public university system in the US.

I suspect that you’re going to have an opportunity in the next year to make a sound financial decision that your parents might thank you for in the years to come.
