What schools should I be going for ?

+1 to Questbridge.

You say the D is for the semester. What is your final grade going to be?

Also, you mention taking 8-9 AP classes. Did you take AP exams? If so, what were your scores?

What percentage of graduating seniors at your school goes on to 4 year college?

What are you ranked in your class? You made it sound like others at your school don’t have the high GPA’s, so colleges will take that into consideration.

@doschicos The grade is a 65. And it was first semester. My counciler was able to take me out of it and place me in drama since I had enough math credits, I am taking a math my senior year to make up for it.

By the time I graduate I will have taken 8/9 AP classes possible. I took AP Euro in 10th grade and got a 3. This year I am taking AP Bio, AP U.S. and AP Gov. Haven’t taken the AP Bio test yet but in AP U.S I feel like I got a 4. In AP Gov I feel like I got a 5. Next year (senior year) I’m taking AP Human Geo, AP Lang, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental.

I’m not sure about the percentage but I’d say less than half. If they do go to college it’s mostly 2 year , vocational training. Very very very few even apply out of state.

@mikayla27 I’m in the top 19th percent. Only reason I’m this low is because kids just take agriculture classes and get 100’s only 5 or so students would be ranked above me if you consider class rigor.

@mikayla27 I’m the only person in my school taking this amount of AP classes.

  1. Retake precalculus during summer school or at a community college nearby. You can’t just leave that D there with no follow up or attempt at mitigating it. That 65 will be a huge red flag on your transcript if you don’t do something about it. Added bonus, it may mean you can take Calculus next year (might it be the 9th AP offered at your HS?)
  2. On your brag sheet*, include the story with the D (“Teacher had a meltdown and gave all students D’s, was subsequently fired”.) Make sure your counselor will speak about it in her recommendation.
  3. Ask your counselor to list your WEIGHTED ranking. Colleges dont care about the rank kids reached by taking Office Assistant, Floral Arrangements, and Culinary Arts.

@MYOS1634 I highly doubt I could retake it. School is pretty weird about scheduling and classes. My counciler put me in stats for next year math credit.

Also my school report both GPAs.

What about summer school? A community college nearby through dual enrollment, the transcript of which you’d give your HS?
Also, you need precalculus to apply to most colleges that give good financial aid. In short, you can’t not take precalculus and you can’t leave that D alone. Act quickly, this is really important. GO see your adviser and ask whether you could take Precalculus through summer school; if not, through Dual Enrollment in CC, and what the process is for it.

For reference, this is what you’ll need to have

  • 4 units of English, including if possible honors or Pre-Ap classes and AP English Language
  • 4 units of History/Social Science, including if possible Pre-Ap and Ap classes
  • World Language through level 3, 4, or AP
  • Math through precalculus honors or calculus
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics + 1 class (preferably PreAp science and 1 AP)
  • 1 Art class
  • A total of 20+ honors/PreAP/Dual Enrollment/AP classes

@MYOS1634 Okay I’ll try to see if there is anyway to re take it or do it through summer school. As for everything else I have only ever taken Pre AP and AP so I should be good on that front.

Ok good, and look at the list of the classes to make sure you have the right number in each subject.

@MannyG1
Make sure to get started on dual-enrollment right away. I’ve taken dual enrollment courses and a lousy administration can turn it into a 3-week process. You have to schedule a meeting with your guidance counselor. Then take the dual enrollment forms to your CC. It’s best to be proactive about it and I would do it first thing Monday morning. Also, community college classes have had open registration for a while now and the summer term is starting very soon so spots are going to be filled up.

@MYOS1634 Would online courses through something like Un of Nebraska online HS work?
http://highschool.nebraska.edu/admissions/tuition-and-fees The cost has me worried.

@MannyG1 Does your school have any online course agreements with lower cost providers?

@frankzane My school does have a dual enrollment sort of thing (it’s largely vocational training, welding etc.) It requires you to go to the community college half the day which I can’t do it’d kill my schedule. Dual enrollment isn’t really an option for my area apart from that program I described.

Atleast I only have to get accepted to one LAC that meets full need and I’m set. I always have my state school if things go sour. I don’t really mind where I go. Going to college is an achievement for me and my family. I just would prefer somewhere with really good academics and engaging classes etc.

I wish I had been advised freshman and sophomore year, but alas it is what it is.

@MYOS1634 The OP will have to weigh in, but I know at our hs handing a GC a “brag sheet” would come across as arrogant and inappropriate. I realize it is the norm at many schools, but definitely not welcomed at all.

@planner03 I actually don’t know what the procedure at my school is since so little students apply out of state. Our Councilers are used to just sending transcripts I think. I will ask about that on Monday.

What’s your home state?

@doschicos Arkansas

This is roughly the list I came up with based on recommendations, obviously I’ll have to shrink it down to 10 - 12 colleges but this is a start. I added the expected cost to me based on their tuition calculators. Also since I will need a lot of aid is it worth applying to out of state public schools?

State schools

A lot of the colleges in the low reach/match grouping are really reaches for you (and many!) with your GPA. Also, those acceptance rates are several years old. Haverford, for example, was below 19% this year and 21% last year.

@doschicos Yeah I’m definitely not expecting much. Any of these colleges will definitely be a achievement for me to get into. I’m just gonna hope my essays turn out really good and I can bump my ACT up to a 34. I’ll be happy going to my state flagship.
