I was unexpectedly accepted into Wash U's school of business a few days back and since then I have really been thinking hard about where I want to end up next year. Im really at the point where I have to stop comparing rankings and just look straight to the quality of the education, the quality of the average student and all of the other factors which make college the best time of our lives. I am asking you all to compare Wash U to other schools in terms of "overall package" (education, students, social life, reputation...), in particular to the schools which I applied to: Georgetown, Cornell, Penn, UVA, Northwestern, Emory and Michigan. I would appreciate a comparison to those schools as well as any others which you deem similar. Thanks!!

depends on ur major, but as if I were to pick in general, I would pick Penn over all,
these would follow (in order)
Cornell
Northwestern
Wash U
Michigan
UVA(this one might have a better reputation than Mich, im not sure)
Georgetown
Emory(not many people know about it)

Every school on your list is great, but since you've been accepted to WashU I wouldn't really consider Emory, UMich, or UVA unless they give you a lot of money.

Pending an acceptance to each, I think you should pick solely on fit/FA for the others.

austin you must be crazy. WashU definitely worst school in that list. You must be delusional in saying WashU is better than any of those schools. WashU has to spam free apps to underqualified students just to lower its admission percentage !!

Emory closest. Below the rest on your list.

Northwestern is a good equal... when you look at all the factors they are pretty similar.

For getting a business job

Penn (econ)

Cornell

Northwestern (econ)

Georgetown (business or econ)

WashU (business or econ)

UVA (business)

Emory (business)

WashU (business/ econ) over Emory (business)??... An amazingly unsubstantiated comment. An Emory BBA will fare no worse off than a Penn Econ grade, considering similar grades/ applicants.

I agree. Goizueta is highly regarded.

i would definetly say Emory is the closest in school style and structure. Academically, I would say WashU has similar presige to that of Michigan, Cal, Cornell, etc.

No love for Emory here... with that said, I think you meant to say... Emory is closest to WashU in terms of school style, structure, and academics. Note PA scores (real numbers):

Emory- 4
Wash U StL- 4.1
UMichigan- 4.5
Cornell- 4.6
UCBerkeley- 4.7

WashU is arguably more selective, higher average SAT score, than Emory, but in terms of quality, prestige, or job/ grad school placement, the two schools are far more similar than people on CC would like to believe.

In terms of quality of life (flexibility of curriculum, nice climate, friendly students, dorms like palaces- or "palace-like" dorms, food, things to do on campus and around) Wash U will beat all the schools on this list, except may be Emory.

Strangely, just those two schools - Emory and Wash U - will also be the 2 schools on the bottom of "street" prestige list. People in the know (recruiters, grad schools) are well aware that all the schools on your list produce graduates of roughly equal caliber.

Go for the fit.

despite washington u's prestige and selectivity, i say all the other schools you listed beat washington u. its job placement is horrible. i do not know if it is because of the schools location or what. if you look at businessweek's rankings and grades, washington certainly shouldn't be up there with those schools. i am speaking about the business school of course. it appears that some of you are speaking about the schools in general.

i would put the schools like this:

Penn

Uva, Emory

Michigan, Georgetown, Northwestern

Cornell(doesnt have bus school for undergraduate, just bus program. hardworking grads go on to work for "prestigious" employers. e.g. lehman, ms, citigroup, etc.)

WashU

i'm really suprised Goizueta is ranked so low on the USNEWS undergrad ranking. I mean, come on, businessweek gave Goizueta 4th.

Oh, and i know a person who lives walking distance from WashU, and she saids that Emory is almost exactly like WashU. Both have nicer weathers, lots of money, in southern regions, pretty campus, and attract ambitious pre-med students. I think Fiske Guide also says that.

Thanks for all the responses so far! I really am scared about Wash U's career services office, however I am still trying to feel out the rest of the school before I make my decision. For the record I applied to ILR at Cornell and not the business program.

well...us news ranked harvard number 1 and harvard doesnt even have an undergraduate business school. which one would you believe?

nyjeff06,

You've already got one great school under the belt...Congrats! Not gonna comment on the comparision. But just in case you are not aware, Northwestern (through the Kellogg school) just starts to offer undergrad finance certificate. It can be something to think about. Good luck!

you may want to take a close look at this from Business Week- ratings of undergraduate business schools that came out this week:

well for business,
go to penn if u get accepted
and if not

and u do get accepted to Umich, then probably go there
