A few days ago, I received a letter informing that I am a National Merit Finalist.

My parents keep on telling me that there are additional forms and application things to do before some end of the February deadline in order to compete for the actual scholarships. They talk about how their friend's daughter had to complete extra application materials after receiving the finalist notification.

However, I talked to my counselor and she said she thinks all I have to do now is to wait. I personally have never heard of any finalist having to do extra work after being awarded the title, and after researching the NMSQT website, I don't see anything that indicates additional work needs to be done.

In essence, is there anything I need to do as a finalist?

Read the letter - it tells you all that you need to know. Generally, there is nothing left to do UNLESS a specific school wants more, assuming that you have named a ‘first choice’ school. Mine child is a finalist as well, and I think there is nothing now but the wait.
However, some schools may have scholarships for NMF that have additional steps. So, check the website of the schools you have applied to.

Our S sent an update to his Us informing them of his NMF designation as well as his Eagle Scout award, both of which had happened since his apps were submitted. We felt it was good to update the Us, showing interest & that S had been accomplishing more in the interim since the apps were filed.

In terms of how to qualify for more awards from NMF itself, there wasn’t anything he did. Some Us do require you to choose them as your 1st choice before some deadline to get their merit $$, but it varies by U. You may wish to contact them to check.
