What should I advice my brother about being a Doctor?

Ok my brother is going off to college next yr and he wants to study Pre-med/ Medicine only cuz of the money. He doesn't like to help ppl either or have passion for medicin. The only reason he wants to be a doctor is because "Doctors make a lot of money". What should I tell him? If he wants to become a doctor only cuz he wants money will he be miserable in the future? What should I advise him to major in?

Well, not everyone goes into a specific career because their “passionate” about it. Some people only do it for the money (ie, ibankers, accountants, pharmacists, etc). I mean, whose really passionate about dispensing pills all day (pharmacists), or crunching numbers(accountants). We all aspire to live a certain lifestyle and money is a huge factor.

From what I’ve read and seen so far doctors work 12-14hrs a day, with huge college loans, a big amount of docs are depressed (most of whom are those who are not passionate about that career), barely have time for their family. Now based on that I don’t know if it’s possible to continue a career if you are not passionate about it and only want to do it for money.

You should research ibankers hours(around 90hrs a week), big 4 accountant hours( ~70hrs a week). Most professionals work long hard hours, and it isn’t for everybody. But, for those that make the sacrifice, it can be rewarding.

Craig,

Bankers don’t have to drop $200,000, earn no income for 4 years, then earn 50-60k for 3-5 years before making over 100k, at which point they pay for malpractice insurance on top of the costs of keeping up their practice. If all you want to do is make money, being a doctor is definitely not the best path.

Why do you have to tell him anything? I have a feeling it will work out, one way or another.

I never said being a doctor was the best path to riches, but I doubt anyone would disagree that doctors dont make above average incomes and even have the potential to become millionaires. The point I was trying to get across is that if your aspirations is to become very wealthy you need to put in long and hard hours, as with any other profession(lawyer, accountant, engineer, etc). I doubt most students go to med school because they want to make a “difference”. If you want to make a “difference” you should join the peace Corp, volunteer at homeless shelters, etc.
