What should I do with my life

I realized I kind of messed up because I wanted to do art so I applied to colleges with art but I got pretty much rejected from everywhere except Otis College of Art and Design and CSUF. But I realized a little late that I don’t want to do art anymore and want to go towards the dentistry area or maybe even go undecided if I go to CSUF. But my gpa is pretty bad so my admission to CSUF might get rescinded which I’m afraid of because I really want to go to CSUF now to at least do prerequisites for dental school. But if I get rescinded from CSUF then I have to go to Otis. So I was wondering if I should go to Otis and then transfer to another school if that’s possible. Or try to go to CSUF, but if I get rejected then I have no where to go. I don’t know if I want to go to a CC though because I feel bad for my parents which paid a lot for my art classes. So I have no idea what to do. Please help me :smiling_face_with_tear::sob:

To clarify…you have an acceptance in hand from Cal State Fullerton but have senior year grades that fall below a threshold they’ve supplied for being in good standing? Or do you mean something else?

I would not attend an Art school if you do not intend to pursue art. Why don’t you attend a local community college until you figure things out? No shame in that!

Definitely don’t go to Otis if you’re not fully committed to an art career! If you get rescinded from Fullerton, start out in community college.

Here’s an option to consider: if you’re good at hands-on artistic pursuits and interested in the dental field, you could go to one of the two CA community college programs where you could learn to fabricate dental prostheses.

This would utilize your talents and prepare you for gainful employment in two years. You would also get your GE’s done, so you could still pursue a four year degree and dental school if that interest held up… or you could pursue art if you wanted to… or you could consider other related careers - for example, there are materials scientists who specialize in materials used in dentistry. But in the meantime, the fabrication side might be something you’d be really good at, and you’d get your GE’s done while learning that craft. If you get good grades for those two years, your high school record will no longer matter and you can launch in a new direction as a transfer.

Agree that you should not go to an art school if your heart is not into pursuing art. If CSUF doesn’t work out your other options would be to start at a CC or take a gap year and reapply.

I believe so yes. I have completed the A-G requirements for all except for visual arts which I can make up for, but I’m afraid my D in AP Calc for second semester might get my admission rescinded.

I see! Thank you so much!

I will consider that!

Okay! Thank you so much!

Going to art school, when you’re no longer sure that you actually want to major in art, would be dumb.

Sorry to be so blunt.

Go watch this video → Ultimate Guide To Choosing A College Degree - YouTube

Contact CSUF and tell them about your grade in math. And ask them if it would mean that the acceptance would be rescinded.

If their answer is yes, then DO NOT GO TO ART SCHOOL. Go to community college instead. Get good grades. Pat yourself on the back for saving you & your family a boatload of money. Do a lot of personal exploration, research, etc. to explore various types of majors, careers, job fields, etc. that you want to learn more about. And go TALK to some people who are working in those fields. Find out from them what it’s really like (it’s called an ‘informational interview’).

Changing your mind about what you want to do as a career is NORMAL and VERY COMMON!

You could always get a minor in art, by the way.

It’s all going to work out. If you do end up starting out at community college, it’s not the end of the world! When you graduate with your 4-yr degree, nobody cares that you start out at community college…the BA/BS diploma will say that university’s name on it. Nobody is going to care 5, 10, 20 years from now if you went to community college.

Call the admissions department at Cal State and explain your concerns. If you have a helpful college counselor at your school, you could also explain the situation to them. They may be able to speak to Cal State on your behalf, or at least get you in touch with the right person in the admissions office.

If you speak to Cal State, don’t confuse the situation by telling them all about Otis … just focus on telling them that Cal State is your first choice but you are concerned about your senior AP calculus grade (which because it is a high rigor AP class and because this is not Harvard, I think it will be ok) and the fact that you are interested in attending undeclared / pre dental.

In cases like this, communicating to the college is the key to working it out. If you say nothing, your offer may be rescinded. Trust me, your best chance is to head off the problem before they find out on their own. If you do that, I think it will work out at Cal State.

Thank you so much :smiling_face_with_tear:

Okay, I’ll try that!

I would also do everything possible to bring up the D in calculus – see the teacher after class, use online resources such as khan academy, see if you can get a tutor etc.
