Hey, I attend a California State School. I turned in my FAFSA yesterday. I heard I won't get State Aid because I turned my FAFSA in late. Being that, do you think I'd be able to attend a 4 year-college next year? or will I have to move in back with my mom?

Notes:
my Mom makes only 9 grand a year. We are dirt poor.
I got a 3.5 G.P.A
Pre-Business Major
I'm pretty sure I screwed myself over because I had something good going on.
I'm 18.
I work part time at McDonalds. I don't have any community involvement or extracurricular this year.

If you had any grand suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, back to the hell hole I came from till next year!

With an income that low you should qualify for full pell ($5500 per year)

In California they have the Cal Grant. Some of the veteran posters should be able to explain that in more detail. i am not familar with how it works.

You have missed the deadlines for the Calgrant for this year. Someone more familiar with that system will have to chime in regarding what might be a good plan for you.

I’m attending a public 4 year in California. This is my 2nd semester.

By move back in with my mom, I mean, I won’t be able to afford living around my campus, and I’ll probably have to move back with my mom who lives 1.5 hours away. I’m wondering if you have any resources that I could check out, so I wouldn’t have to do that.

I’m currently living off campus roughly 5 miles away with some of my friends.

First you have to call your FA office and find out if you can appeal because you missed the deadline.

IF the answer is “no,” then find out if you can get your aid back if you request a year’s absence from your school, and then return the following year. And find out the process for aid and school for that. Make sure your school approves your absence and during that year you can’t go to school elsewhere (no cc, etc). Work and save your money during the next year. Your mom’s income is low enough that your income and savings won’t count on FAFSA for next year…so earn as much as you can.

And, in the future, pay attention to deadlines.

The FAFSA deadlines are non-negotiable. They would be excused only if the delay were not the fault of the student (as in a high school refusing to send in GPA verification on time). It is, in any event, not up to the college to make this determination. Any appeal would have to go to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). He can and should, however, start with his college financial aid office and ask them for guidance.

Missing the deadline will likely render the OP ineligible for the Cal Grant entitlement grants . . . but I don’t know if he might not still be eligible for the competitive grants. It’s worth asking.

I also don’t know if taking a year off will help. If he’s already received a Cal Grant, I don’t know if skipping a year would impact his continued eligibility. If he hasn’t previously received a Cal Grant, then his only option might be the competitive grants.

Finally, there is always the possibility of a grant from the school itself, and that’s also something the OP should ask.
