Hello,
I finished my first year of college and i started well but i went down hill and right now my GPA is like 2.7. I know this is horrible but iv learnt from my mistakes and i am going to work my ass off to raise it a lot. After learning from my problems I know i can easily get my shit together and raise my GPA a lot. I want to go to med school and I know i can raise my GPA and do well in MCAT but what worries me is that:
- For my first math class I dropped with a W the first time, then took it in summer and failed because i didn't expect the class to go so fast and now i am taking it again an i know i can do very well.
2.I got a C in chem and will be taking it again.
Ill be retaking these classes to raise my GPA. These were the 2 big mishaps that worry me a ton and that will never be repeated. Is it even possible for me to get into med school with these two issues? Iv made a lot of changes in my life in order for me to do better from this semester going on.
Lastly, I wanted to ask what do med schools look at, from what i got searching online they look at:
- MCAT score.
- College GPA but do they look at high school
- Extra curricular school activities.
Any advice would be nice and would like the opinion of as many people possible. Thanks a lot for everyones help i really appreciate it.
Ya but I know it is optimistic but i was wondering with someone with experience can tell me if i do well for the rest of my semesters and raise my GPA do i still have a chance because although you might think it is dumb for me to ask this i am just really worried.
Thanks for the link tough it was really helpful.
You have a chance if and only if you can follow through on your rather nebulous plan to “do better”.
Doing better is much easier said than done. Ask your question again in a year after you’ve retaken your previous poor grades and earned all As in those as well as all As in all your other classes.
You should know that allopathic medical schools (MD programs) do not permit grade replacement so both your original grades and your newer grades will always be included when calculating your GPA/sGPA for med school admission.
Have you seriously damaged your chances of gaining admission to med school? Unquestionably. Is the damage fatal? Too soon to tell.
P.S. Med school admission is all about "what have done lately?"Adcomms don't look at any high school stuff.
Even though this is written for undergrad admissions, it’s pretty much true for med school too. The only difference being that they want people who they can see as doctors whereas obviously UGs are looking for a more diverse group of people: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways
