I'm trying to decide whether to major in Business Administration or Aviation Management (which is basically Business Admin with aviation). How do salaries and unemployment rates and job prospects compare between specialized and general majors? What do y'all think?

Are you a senior- have you been chosen what college you’re going to? The thing is most colleges don’t offer Aviation Management, so it’d be tougher to find a school you like with that major.

How do salaries and unemployment rates and job prospects compare between specialized and general majors

This question is impossible to answer, because it’s very field-specific. I imagine the difference is much different when considering English vs. creative writing instead of, say, mechanical engineering vs. aerospace engineering. Even still, though, the answer may not be very useful if you intend to pursue the same kinds of jobs. And that’s another question, too. A mechanical engineer can probably get most of the same kinds of jobs an aerospace engineer can get. But that’s not necessarily true for a physics major.

I think it would be better specifically to compare salaries of aviation management and business management majors.

Salary.com tells me that the median salary for an aviation manager is $185,129. I’d imagine that’s with a master’s degree and some years of experience, though. The median salary for a business administration major may be more or less meaningless, as the scores will range widely and be affected by whether or that that major earned an MBA.

I think a better technique to select this major is going to be based upon your own career interests. First of all, as was already mentioned, aviation management is offered at fewer schools than general business management. If the list of schools to which you can apply is very narrow when limiting yourself, try expanding your list to schools that offer business management as well.

If you do end up at a school that offers both (or are choosing between two schools you like equally that only offer one each), that’s when it’s time to investigate what kinds of careers you can get with either major. Business admin is pretty general and you could do pretty much anything with that major, so the question is whether or not you will be more attractive to aviation jobs with an aviation management or a business admin major. You may want to contact some folks at airports and ask them, or access your parents’ networks.

Another option is to major in aerospace engineering and then earn an MBA, as many managers of airport operations do that apparently.
