I've been trying to volunteer this summer, and I was wondering what colleges especially like to see for volunteer work. I'm thinking that it's doing something you have a passion for, but I'm asking this because I heard from a person that colleges don't really care much for book shelving at all, so I'd rather not do something that boring and look for something more fulfilling instead.

What do you intend to major in in college?

Colleges like to see volunteer work that most people don’t have

Could you give me some examples then?

I mean – it really depends on the college and actually the individual counselor that you have.

Volunteering at hospitals, in elderly folks or convalescent homes, tutoring underprivileged kids, helping in soup kitchens, park clean-ups and other environmental campaigns, raising money for a good cause, organizing fundraisers…

Community service shouldn’t be about what “colleges really want to see.” What do YOU like to do? Do you want to be a physician? Then volunteering at a hospital or as an EMT may be perfect for you. Do you want to be a teacher, or do you just like working with children? Tutoring may be a good thing. Do you have good PR skills, are you good at hosting events? Organizing fundraisers and participating in marches and such may be a good idea for you. If you really like to read and love being in libraries, then being a page in the library may be the best thing for you.

Pick a service project that you are really passionate about and that will be fulfilling to you. There’s no specific type of service that’s better than the other.

Um, shouldn’t you be deciding what volunteer work to do out of the goodness of your own heart as opposed to trying to get an angle in the college admissions process?

Please…I’m sure high school students have better things to do than volunteer out of the goodness of their hearts

If it interests you, great (unlikely). If it doesn’t, do it anyways and make up some bs about how fulfilling it was.

I volunteer at a hospice. I don’t know whether it is unique, but I do know I enjoy it.

ONLY do what you enjoy.

DO NOT worry about what colleges want to see, this will only make your activity look fake. So, have fun and keep it real.

Yep, definitely what you enjoy. Disregard what you think colleges will want to see and follow what you want to do.
The best community service or job opportunity for an individual should tie into their interests if possible. For example, if you envision yourself at med school someday, of course you should volunteer at the hospital for experience. I love to cook, so I work at the soup kitchen :]
Have fun and good luck!

Man you’re a joke. It’s people like you that colleges don’t like - people who just do stuff to buff up their app and don’t care at all about what they’re doing.

Volunteer wherever you would like to. Personally, I’ve attended a summer program in all my middle school years, and I volunteered there for my high school summers. I’ll have 300+ hours from volunteering, and I can proudly say that I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
