What the heck are rolling admissions?

So there's regular, ED, and EA. What the heck are rolling admissions? More than half of the colleges I'm applying to use rolling admissions, and I'm forced to choose it on Common App .... there's no Regular Decision choice ..... just EA and Rolling. No way I'm applying EA .... can someone describe to me what Rolling is? Is rolling different from regular?

This is how I would describe rolling admissions…(others may describe it differently)

The school has an open application period - say Aug 15, 2009 thru Mar 1, 2010. So, those who send their applications in during September, may already have received their acceptances. Generally, you don’t have to wait til spring to get the big “yes” or “no”.

Sometimes, schools with such a rolling admission are more “lenient” with stats towards the beginning of the enrollment period. But, as you get closer to the end, your stats may need to be higher to gain admittance.

So, apply as early as you can. It helps. And, it’s nice to enter the winter with an acceptance or two firmly in your hand! :)
