What to bring to Cornell

bump since I’m looking into this now lol

How about an area rug?

area rug is ok…but on carpet?

Dorm rooms are carpeted? I thought I saw linoleum??

Question about bikes…I know there are bike rooms in the dorms, but when should we reserve a space? Can I do that now, or can I take care of it on move-in day?

Do you need extra lighting? The housing site says there is only a desk lamp.

i would definitely get extra lighting…supposedly there are certain restrictions on what lamps you can bring…

although the desklamp is really good…the problem is the overhead lighting…it’s not fluorescent like some other college’s dorms have :(

@woody Nope. No linoleum unless it’s in one of the kitchens, and tile in the bathrooms. The rest of the time it’s carpet.

@countryangel I’m pretty sure you can do it on move-in day. You might not be able to get the key that day, because sometimes it takes a while to process all the bike room applications, but you should be able to reserve a spot.

@Kimba I lived in the newest dorm and our interior lighting tended to be a bit dim. Dickson doesn’t even have an interior lighting source for inside the room (other than the desklamp).

Thanks, chendrix! Do you know where we go for a bike room app.? Are there different apps for each dorm, or is there something like a Bicycle Office where everyone goes? xD

The app for the bike stuff is actually online right now.

Commuter and Parking Services

Thanks chendrix. Would one good floor lamp and the existing desk lamp suffice? Also will there be room to store skis in the dorm room closet? D will be in Dickson.

Sweet. Thanks roneald!

I registered my bike and will receive the sticker in the mail when I get on campus…is this enough to secure a space in my dorm’s bike room?

@woody one floor lamp and the desk lamp should suffice. The dorm closets are usually not very large, but the Dickson singles closets tend to be larger than most. However, they do have shelves on the top that take away from some open space, so your D might have some trouble if they are large skis.

are dorms the only place you can store skis? i’m looking forward to skiing on the breaks.

How about a printer? Earlier posts say yes - but they were from 2 yrs ago. Have things changed?

I brought my printer up and it was a great idea.

Sometimes you need to work on that paper until 3-4 in the morning and there is no place open to print. Plus it’s cheaper to provide your own paper and ink than the cost of printing at a public lab.

Also, an all-in-one that has a scanner/copier/printer is a good investment.

try to find one that is very good on ink…u will be printing A LOT

What about school supplies in terms of taking notes? I’ve never taken my laptop to class before, so I’d like to see how taking hand-written notes goes. Are notebooks or looseleaf binders more convenient, or does it depend on your schedule (ex. binder for the three lectures that you have in a row; notebook for the one class you have on fridays)?

I can share my strategy that worked well. I bought a bunch of 3 ring floppy folders with pockets in a bunch of colors, and also bought a bunch of 100 page non-tearable notebooks to match up with the colors of the floppy folders. It was cheap, color coded, and storable.
