What to bring to Cornell

Sounds like a good strategy :] Would you say that one 100-page notebook per class is enough for a whole semester?

it depends on how big you write.

i say that 100 pages is more than enough for most non-science/math classes.

you have to remember that there are only about 12 weeks in a semester and you only have lecture like 2x a week…

That’s true. Most of my lectures are 3x per week but I don’t think there’s much of a difference there, lol (and I write pretty small). We also need to take notes in the FWS, right?

I’m also taking Chin 1101, which has 3 lectures and 5 discussion sessions per week. Are there a lot of notes during these discussions too, or is it mostly speech practice?

youre not allowed to take notes or bring anything with you to discussion (at least thats what i read for last semesters chinese class)

also some professors post their powerpoints online ahead of time so that you can print and take notes with them.

some wont post ahead of time and will post after the lecture.

some wont post them at all.

kk. Thanks everyone!

My daughter never used her laptop in class until she took an art history class. It was useful to find the art work online while the professor is talking about it, cut and paste the image to her notes.

Another thing to remember is you could buy most of your school supplies on campus or Ithaca. There is no reason to bring papers, pens from home. Pack stuff you couldn’t easily get on campus, or too heavy for you to carry - boots, winter clothes, nice clothes and shoes for girls, personal pictures. In my daughter’s case, she packed a lot of Asian dry food with her.

thing about bringing stuff from home oldfort is that it’ll be a lot cheaper to stock up while places like wally have sales

newegg is having a back to school special soon

ResurgamBell - what’s cheaper at Wally? Winter stuff, nice clothes, or Asian food?

thinks like spirals, folders, binders, pens, printer paper…

oh and i’m sure things like ramen/easy mac/tuna are cheaper to buy at sams/costco in bulk…

there’s no bulk stores here D:

Haha thanks for the info!

@ oldfort: there’s no need to be sarcastic. I agree with ResurgamBell. I’m going to bring some school supplies to tide me over till winter break. They don’t take that much room and it’s cheaper to stock up while Staples is having it’s back-to-school sales.

i’ve got a few questions…i’m in mews

does anyone know if there are full length mirrors anywhere in the dorm, or should i bring one

should i bring a bedside table for a table lamp, ipod speakers/alarm clock, etc. or should i just use that chest of drawers thats in the room as a bedside table?

also, is there enough room to bring one of those foldable butterfly chairs? i’d like one for reading and such but from pictures it doesnt seem like there’d be enough space

that butterfly chair might get bulky…but if you can fold it, it should be fine.

bedside table would definitely not fit. i think the dresser is fine for the alarm clock and stuff.

not sure about mews and full length mirrors…lets see if anyone from mews comes here and can confirm

@Tiffany- I asked because I don’t know Wally, I don’t know what they sell. Why do you assume the worst?

Wally = Wal-Mart

but to be honest…i never needed more than pen and paper as an ILR major…

it just depends on what courses you take. binders are nice to keep all your LONG readings you print out organized.

a three hole punch is convenient…as is a mini stapler…

Wish I had had the chance to stand inside a dorm and look around - would have helped a lot. GATech has a 360 panorama for each of their types of room in each hall right on their site - something like that would really have helped. As it is, I don’t even see interior shots of the rooms on the housing site.

alamode, Mews’s rooms have full length mirrors behind the doors in the rooms.

I swear to everyone here that you can almost buy everything in Ithaca if you forgot something or find that you need something. They sell almost everything school-related at Target in the mall, which is like a 15 minutes bus ride from north campus. You can also get most school supplies from the Cornell Story, although it’s much more expensive.

And after that if there’s still something you can’t find buy it online.

should we bring a water pot so we can boil water? so we can make cup of noodles :O!!
