I think you’d have to be ranked at about 23 or below to be within the top 8%.

however, you could still have a chance. Does UT take URM status into consideration?

You are applying to TAMU as well, right?

I’m not sure if they consider URM status, and yes ma’am, I am applying to TAMU.

Racial/ethnic status is only considered. http://www.utexas.edu/academic/ima/sites/default/files/CDS_UT_Austin2009-10%20(Final).pdf

Well, now I know that I can for SURE afford A&M. I’m just not sure I’ll get in. Hopefully that’ll work out if UT doesn’t.

Good to know that you can afford TAMU…great school! Go Aggies.

I’m applying to Texas State (this is NOT UT) because I have automatic admission there.

They have the “Bobcat Promise” for families with an income of under $25k/year & my mom will make about $23-24k this year, so I qualify for that (they pay for tuition).

Then I would get a TEXAS grant and the Pell Grant on top of that, right?

liveandlearn,
So good to see your search progressing!

:D I could explain several reasons why your grandfather is misguided (I chose UArk over several other options, and was both employable, and got into medical school…), but you don’t argue with the money unless it’s really important to you, and I think they’d respect that. Honestly, if you could get your grandfather on campus for a tour and a meeting with faculty, he’d change his tone. In a sense, that’s what my family did with me (just the roles were reversed).
At any rate- don’t give up hope on scholarships at Arkansas- you may qualify for their Silas Hunt scholarship based off your background (it is not just for under-represented ethnic groups, it’s more holistic). Be sure to put in a good application (it’s due November 15th, I believe), but there’s definitely still hope if the resume and essay are good. Be sure to let them know a little about your background and why you want to go there.
Good luck, I think things will work out for you. You’ve got some great schools on your list with some excellent aid and scholarship programs.

Texas State in San Marcos is a very good back up plan for A&M.
