Hi, I was just wondering if I get to keep extra money if I get more scholarship and grant money than COA. Does it bring down my work study or my aid or what?

My package breaks down like this:
COA: $19,830
EFC: 10

Aid:
Pell Grant: 5300
Freshman Grant: 1000
Student Aid Grant: 5120
KFC Scholarship: 5000
Vision fund: 500
Michigan Promise: 1000
Work-study: 3000

Total: 20620

I also might have a few more scholarships coming my way, but I was just curious as to whether or not I would still get them if I have more than I need. Does that make sense?

Thank you :).

No, not usually. The scholarships will probably replace the work study first and than any school aid. You should check with the school to verify how the outside scholarships will be used.

Well, I had an additional 5400 in aid from the school that these scholarships have already replaced (it was a program to reduce loans for poverty students). The rest of the aid is mine to keep, I already asked them about that. However, I did not ask about work study… I guess I should have lol.

In most cases schools will reduce the self help portions of aid such as work study and loans. Only after that would they reduce need based grants. This is not the case for all schools but does seem to be the most common scenario.

Federal aid rules do not allow scholarships + aid + EFC to exceed the COA.

Ok, thanks swim :). That’s what I wanted to know.
