I’m a chemical engineering tranfer student. I’m done with all of major prep except for my last physics class.
gpa: 3.94
My personal statements and my ECs were stellar.
So far I’ve been rejected from UCSB.
Waitlisted as UCLA
Accepted at UCSD (nanoengineering), UCD, and UCI.
Waiting on UCB.(find out in 2 days)
But heres my issue - if I dont get into UCB. My current employer offered to pay for everything if I went to UCI, but they dont have such a great chemical engineering program. As a result, I dont really want to go there, but I also dont want to lose a year. Should I just take their offer?
Hey, its free schooling, don’t turn it down! A chemical engineering degree from a school as prestigious as UCI at no cost is an opportunity that should NOT be turn down, even if it isn’t highly ranked in that field. It can only help build your resume. That being said, see if your employer will pay for UCSD. If not, go to UCI and be grateful for the amazing opportunity you’ve been given!
Well, I do not really want to go to UCSD as it is nanoengineering. I rather do something broad for my undergrad. UCSD was a backup of a backup of a backup. Looks like I’ll be going to Irvine if I dont get into Cal.
UCI is certainly good enough for chemE. Why would say that it’s not???

Based on what??? USNews??? If so, then does that mean that only a small handful of colleges have a “great chemE program,” and the 100+ others do not? WRONG
@mom2collegekids Well, I attend Mt San Antonio College and everyone in the physics and engineering department just shot UCI down. They said is hard to find a job out of there, its hard to get research and most of all students who didn’t get into UCLA or Cal go there (implying its mediocre). Basically, imagine UCI as a plane and then firing 100 missiles at it. Thats what they basically did.
How does “everyone in the physics and engineering department” know these things to be true? You are going to waste a year of your life on some rumors? Why not drive down to UCI and talk to them? Visit the career center, see who recruits on campus. Talk to students, see how hard it is to get research positions & internships (the latter are more important, BTW). Sure, kids that get into Cal or UCLA would choose those schools, but that does not mean UCI is mediocre, just that its not as prestigious as those two. It is astounding to think you’d walk away from an ABET program because it was badmouthed by some people at your junior college.
Don’t listen to blown-out pompous hot breath from people who aren’t even authoritative on the matter. Those people’s opinions are comparable to the neighbors’ opinions…UC Irvine is an EXCELLENT school and if your employer offers to pay, go for it! That type of arrangement is the best you can ask for.
Is ‘everyone’ community college students or the professors? I think I can guess. If you have an employer who is willing to pay for UCI there is one employer who thinks well of it. Where is the money from those other people? Congrats to you.

Anyone else find it hilarious that those at a CC are implying that UCI is “mediocre”? lol
They weren’t firing missiles, they were firing sour grapes.
