What to Major in

Hey Guys,

I got in EA to UI way back in december. I really want to do pre-med and eventually become a pediatrician. Does anyone have any suggestions for possible majors? What classes do I have to take to fulfill the pre-med requirements. I was thinking majoring in psychology since UI's psych department is so stellar.

pre med requirements are usually a year of math (at least semester of calculus, you can either do stats or calc 2), a year of bio, gen chem, and orgo. there’s also some english requirement but everyone fulfills that with rhet 105. you’d want to check out the med schools themselves for the specific requirements, the above is a just a general understanding.

most people major in biology (IB or MCB), where the curriculum fulfills the requirements. there’s other premeds here who major in kinesiology or psych, and they’ll take the same pre-requisite courses.

to be honest, major in whatever interests you. no point in cornering yourself in a major that you hate just to look “pretty” to med schools. you’re here for 4 years - you might as well study something you enjoy.

edit: just to point this out, from what i see, mcb and ib are the harder science majors, while kinesiology/psych/ihealth are easier. however, the prereq courses may not be a part of the kinesiology/psych/ihealth curriculum, and as such, you’ll have to take them alongside your major courses.

Here’s a link from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) that will help:
