Hi :) I'm looking at colleges and thinking about what I want to major in, and I just can't decide. My dream job would be to work with children (probably elementary school age) and to educate them about environmental issues. (I'd also prefer to live in a city like SF, NY, Boston, etc) I know it's a really random job, and definitely not the most lucrative career, but I think I would really enjoy something along those lines. Any advice on some majors to check out?

Major in any liberal arts that you feel you will want to pursue from an instructor standpoint. Some schools even allow you to major in early childhood education.

Something related to environmental studies is ideal. Find a place that lets you double major in education.

Getting a teaching credential will help. but your internships will be important.

Start now if you can. Find an organization that teaches environmental issues to students. We have a nature center that does it. Our city government runs varied environmental programs. We have a monthly magazine about sustainability. Also look at the policy organizations that lobby and advocate for legislation; the biggest need there may be fundraising, but that isn’t a bad skill to get. By the time you finish college, you’ll be a go-to person for environmental information and tested teaching ideas.
