Greetings! I am an incoming sophomore, and I plan on purchasing a graphing calculator before the new school year begins. The problem is that I don't know which calculator to choose. If it helps, I will be in Chemistry and Algebra 2 next year, but I plan to use the calculator until senior year. From your own experience, which calculator would you suggest? Plus, what kind of calculator do you have? Thanks!

I have a TI-84 Plus. This is what I used this past year in Algebra 2 and it had all of the functionality needed for my Algebra 2 Honors course.

TI-89. It’s worth it.

Alright well I have a questions what is the difference between the TI-89 And the TI 84 Plus? Everyone seems to one or the other

I have also heard of the TI-nspire which looks amazing and was the one i was thinking of buying

I have a TI-83 silver plus (I think that’s what it’s called) and it works great for all the basically high school math you need. Not sure about upper level stuff though. I REALLY want an nspire.

I mostly use my TI-89 due to its CAS. The ability to factor, equation solve, simplify, along with other things make it so much better compared to a TI-84. The TI-84 can use equation solver, but it’s just more work. The TI-89 is a little harder to use, but it’s features make up for it. For your needs, I would say a TI-84 is good enough, but a TI-89 would definitely be better. You should also look into the N-spire CAS; it might be even better.

Also, the calculator that I do prefer due to it’s incredible speed is the HP-32SII. This calculator, however, incorporates RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) which basically eliminates the need for parentheses but is different to use. You wouldn’t make much use of this calculator though as it is not a graphing calculator.

I’ve heard that the TI-89 is better (especially for calculus-level work), but I use the TI-84.

I have both the TI-84+SE and the TI-89 Titanium. Each has its own set of capabilities.

I personally own a Ti-83 plus and it works fine. The Ti-84 plus lets you utilize more memory for programs which aid you a lot and the UI on it was more appeasing for me. However the Ti-89 is the top of the line. The Ti-89 can do really anything on it as my friend had one and it was amazing to watch it go. Overall remembering formulas and knowing what to do with paper and pencil is encouraged and I know when I take pre-calc this year I do not get access to a calculator and they are taking it away from algebra 2 soon.

Thanks to everyone for your input! I’ll look more into it.
