I've looked around the internet at various different times and i've seen all types of different answers to this question. I would just like to know some of the jobs that you can get with a degree in CS. I'm aware that it's up and coming but it kind of sounds like it can be tied into just about anything... Can someone please just try and give me a blunt answer to this question? I am really looking forward to majoring in CS in college and can't wait to begin thinking about a real career!!

Bump…

Think of a career, and it can probably somehow relate to Comp Sci or need CompSci in it somehow. The most common and orthodox careers are things like Database Admin, Programmer, Game design, etc.

So ideally this is a safe major and I shouldn’t really worry about not finding a career path?

I may be a bit biased because I also want to major in CompSci, but I say as long as you you stay away from the stuff being outsourced (like help desk stuff), you can use CompSci in various ways.

Lord help me if I ever become a help desk person…

I have never heard of a CS major aspiring to be at a help desk lol

It is easier for a CS major to find jobs than even most other engineers. The unemployment rate in the US is very low. Even if you are bad, you will probably still find a job. However, you shouldn’t go into CS just for the money, it is a tough major. You need to be very good with math…

Define good with math, and I’m not about the money haha but it is a nice addition, to be certain.

I just finished AP calc AB and it was pretty much a joke class, 720 on math on SAT if that helps.

CS majors typically start with Associate Software Engineer, Quality Assurance, or Product Manager. These are 3 key roles in building a product. Product Manager defines what the product should look like and how users will use it. Software Engineer writes the code and builds the product. Quality Assurance tests the product and makes sure that it works as expected. CS majors also end up in Technical Sales roles, where their expertise is required for sales. These folks help sell the product. In the end its about building this and solving problems!
