Hey! So I’m planning on double majoring in music and a science (maybe bio). I plan on moving on to med school after undergrad. So for the music major, I was just interested in what types of music majors are offered nationwide (like music production, music performance, music ed, etc.). So what types of music majors are out there? Thanks in advance!
I just answered your other thread. It is unclear whether you are referring to BM programs. If you want to double major with science, then it would not be a BM in music unless you do a double degree. Read the Double Degree Dilemma essay toward the top of this forum. I tried to give you an overview of your options on the other thread.
If you are looking at so many different music majors, you might want to take some time and reflect on what it is you really want. Do you love playing an instrument, or writing music, or playing with studio equipment, or do you want to teach music in public schools? If you want to go to med school there is no point in considering the more career-oriented music majors like music ed or production or music industry etc.
That said, you CAN do these majors and still go to med school if you cover the prereq’s and there are programs after graduation that accomplish this, for a cost of course. Look at Goucher’s for one example.
Also check out Belmont University in Nashville. Part of their philosophy is that all music students study all music types
Oh thanks! That’s wonderful! @NYsaxmom
Yep, just saw your reply. Thanks! And I totally agree that music ed and all wouldn’t be much of a good idea. I’m looking for a program that would include all types of music under it; not just jazz or not just baroque. So I was wondering f that would be music performance, or is it called something else? @compmom
I think that given the whole picture, and your multi-faceted interests, a college or university BA or BS (versus conservatory or school of music BM) might serve you best. Though BM’s would offer opportunities to try things, the course of study does involve a focus in one area/instrument.
You could look at Berklee, which is a top notch multifaceted school with all kinds of offerings (also it recently merged with Boston Conservatory and has a double degree program with Harvard). Berklee is also part of a consortium with, I believe, Northeastern nearby so you could take courses there.
For more contemporary music, Miami Frost and USC Thornton are often mentioned.
Oberlin and Bard might be options too.
If you are looking towards med school, make sure you go to a school where you can fulfill all of your science requirements – a university or LAC with a strong music program might fit the bill, or places like UCLA, USC.
Thanks soo much! Those are wonderful option! I can’t thank you enough! @compmom
post bacc program examples http://www.goucher.edu/learn/graduate-programs/post-baccalaureate-premed-program/
Harvard extension, Northeastern (online), George Washington, Columbia, UConn. UVA, Drexel, many others.
It can be expensive of course, since it is post-college but worth looking into if you want to do a BM.
That’s a wonderful program. Thanks! @compmom
Look at Tulane as well. My daughter is majoring in music composition and film production.
