go to Middlebury? I know there's a variety everywhere, but is it mostly like jocks, preps, eccentrics, artsy people, etc.? What's the reputation?

Smart people.

and I'd say more jock/prep than artsy... but not like some places.

It's a small elite Northeast LAC, so you're going to get a lot of smart people, more liberal than conservative (although not as liberal as others). Definitely very active, both physically and mentally. It's a Private school, so there tends to be a fair number of people with money, but they do a good job with financial aid so there are plenty of students on scholarships. Midd is not as artsy as say, Weslyan or Vassar, but it's got a growing art program (art history is quickly becoming one of the more popular majors). The setting makes people very conscious of the environment and the strength of the environmental program adds to that consciousness as well. It's a rural environment, but the quality of its academics draws tons of people from urban areas. The strength of its international programs also draws people from all over the world. It's a small school so people are pretty social and it's difficult to isolate yourself. You'll find Midd to be a place where people work hard and play hard in a rural environment with a fantastic world view.

Intellectual w/o attitude - but increasingly intense... ratcheted up by the significant international enrollment. Playful, creative - quidditch, mystery radio theater, black box theatre productions are a few cases in point. Happy - profs and commons deans are a big reason why; most are really great people, demanding but supportive. Active - jocks go see artsy friends perform in concerts, theatre... and arts folks also play intramurals, go to varsity games - no big divides.
