What was your major and what is your job now?

SyrAlum takes the prize!

Major: Biology, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics
Career: Actuary (30+ years)

My D1 is a history major (after theater and art history). She dreams of being a Disney Princess. She did the DisneyCollege Program and has tried out for Princess about 20 times. I’m trying to convince her that making $12.50 and hour is not a career job.

DH

UG major: Studio Art: Painting focus

Profession: Code Wrangler (programmer). He majored in art because, and I am quoting him, “he already knew everything about computers.” All of his computer languages are self-taught. He made the jump from graphic design to programming when, as a graphic arts temp at a software company, he heard some programmers and a supervisor talking about a problem they couldn’t solve. “I can fix that,” he said. And he did.

Major: Biology
Minor: school didn’t have, but 23 credits in Chemistry

Current job as a Revenue Analyst.Spent many years in Corporate Finance/Accounting.

Back story: I spent 5 years a a Medical Technologist and disliked it, so I returned to school to study accounting and got my CPA.

I’ll challenge you, @SyrAlum

Major: religious studies with a focus on ancient and archaic religions.

Started seminary but left after a semester (too difficult to coordinate with clergy spouse)

Profession for the past 18 years: IT/software in higher ed

H’s degree is Industrial Engineering, and he works as a Mechanical Engineer. He has a Master of Science in Administration, but he has chosen not to take management positions offered to him through the years. He really, really likes being an engineer. He does automotive fastener testing, and he actually enjoys his job. (The stuff that comes with the job - political b.s. - he does not like … which explains his turning down management positions!)

D has a degree in Medicine, Health & Society. She focused on health care delivery systems in school. She had no interest in working in that field … she just enjoyed studying those things. Guess what? She has been working in positions directly related to her degree for the past six years.

Me: Drama, then MBA in Human Resources. Career in HR and instructional development.
H: History. Program manager in IT, independent management consultant
D1: English, just graduated from law school.
D2: French and International Relations. Currently temping and acting in small independent films and local theatre.
D3: Criminal Justice: Real estate appraiser

Undergrad: Interdisciplinary studies major, concentration in English and environmental science
Grad: journalism

I actually lived my degrees for the first part of my career, working in writing and editing at a wildlife organization and as editor of an environmental organization’s magazine.

For the last 19 years (cannot believe it’s been that long!) I’ve stayed in journalism but as the managing editor of a group of newspapers for older adults (and have managed to age into that demographic myself while there).

Major: Undergrad—economics; PhD—sociology
Profession: Research consultant specializing in qualitative methodologies

Me: BSEE. Design engineer specializing in aerospace and defense.
DW: BS Nursing, ICU nurse. Returned after two years for her MS as a family NP, practicing since then.
S1: BBA in MIS. He works as an analyst in healthcare software for a consulting outfit.
D: BS Zoology last December. She has been working as a math tutor but leaves for the Peace Corps end of the month, set to teach HS physics and chemistry in Africa. Who knows after that. She’s talking about grad school in Europe.
S2: Finished his freshman year with plans for a double major in Business and Economics.
