What are some things about Amherst that aren’t so good that you wish you could change? What wouldn’t you change?
Our dining hall really isn’t that great. I am not someone who is overly picky with my food, but some of their main entrees are…blah. If you want to be able to appreciate the food, which may take time, it is often necessary to improvise. People here have lots of varying experiences/opinions about Val, but I’d say overall it could definitely use some improvements. Maybe having a campus-wide vote on the best and worst dishes, and throwing out the bottom half of unliked dishes in order to come up with a different (ideally, better) menu could help.
This being said, Val does have: an extensive salad bar, pasta, fruit, a wide variety of drinks, and lots of bread options. It is mainly the entrees that need improved upon.
I’d say another con is that there are no minors (or concentrations, or whatever you call them) here. People often double major, but I’d be nice to have minors as an option as well.
Furthermore, with the destruction of the socials, social life has taken a bit of a hit. People are mixed as to how much of an impact this has had, but overall I think it has hampered social life here to a reasonable extent.
There are other aspects of Amherst I wish I could change, but realize are fairly static: liberal intolerance, the athlete/non-athlete divide, etc.
The good things are many, here are a few I particularly enjoy: our gym and pool, Grab and Go, the town of Amherst, the ability to borrow a car, a good reputation for academics, large club teams, and a very devoted faculty.
