Whoa there was this passage in an SAT i took about this guy buying a homeless person a sandwich, and ended up getting attacked

Those that are in a legitimate bad way typically are trying to find a way to survive and won't beg. A lot of those that are on the street just trying to survive have mental issues. They'll pick up anything they think they can use, but they generally won't bother other people unless it is through irrational behavior.

Those that are going around blatantly begging are generally putting on an act. Of course there are exceptions, but such is typically the case.

We have a guy here that is just not right in the head, but's a genuinely nice guy. He tries to take care of himself somewhat. He made willingly made a choice to live on the streets even though he has a place to stay. I will buy him a meal when I see him, but he has never once begged for or even asked for anything from me, and I have never seen him do so of others.

I'm a police sergeant, and sometimes when the weather was really bad he'd come find me so that he could "get out of the weather" for a while.

He's finally gotten himself off of the streets, but there are plenty others out there like him. If treated with respect they will never give a minute's trouble.
