We live in Massachusetts and my son just got accepted at University of Kentucky. I was wondering the same thing about the jewish population at Kentucky. Actually the President of the University is Jewish. We are going to take him out for a visit. The school has a lot to offer.
@DeferredChicago After living in Kentucky all my life and spending a lot of time in Northern Florida, I have to say that an experience in Kentucky is probably a lot better I love downtown Lexington and although I haven’t been in that area much it seems fairly diverse to me. I can personally say that at my high school in Kentucky of about 1200 people, with three Jewish students, there are no issues with bullying here. The three students are brothers and very proud of being Jewish and everyone knows that and respects them. I think UK is a great school, especially for the sports and sororities and what not. And most Kentuckians really are kind and accepting of other people.
@sk0213 Interesting thread. What did your daughter think of Kentucky upon visiting? Which college did she decide on?
@rgr717 UK didn’t resonate with her. she committed to Binghamton but was just taken off the wait list for Lehigh and we are all twisted up again
Interesting thread and some great information to digest. DD and I are going on a road trip the weekend after next to include a visit to UK, along with West Virginia University and U of Cincinnati (no official visit there, just a self guided tour). This past weekend we visited DW and I took a ride around Lehigh as well, it is very close to us in Pennsylvania and weren’t overly impressed, despite knowing the strength of the school’s engineering program (DD is looking at biomed eng and pharmacy), but DD still wants to visit there too. The Greek influence at Lehigh was pretty intense and knowing quite a few alumni it lives up to its work hard/party hard reputation (neither of which are DD’s thing). Good luck to you and your daughter in making that final decision. (-:
Perhaps email Lehigh Hillel and see if they can quickly arrange an overnight for her before the end of school. I don’t think that the Lehigh admissions office arranges overnights.
It is smack in the middle of finals and finals prep time right now, even if they did offer overnights it would be unlikely at this point. Doesn’t hurt to try, but chances are very doubtful.
Sorry, It was me who forgot that it was already May 5th
Good UK offer. Big 10 all highly selective. Could try Purdue & the 2 Iowas, Ohio U. Rutgers has the largest Jewish population.
Where did your daughter end up? Mine is at UKY.
@sandybring, I believe the OP’s daughter is attending SUNY Binghamton.
@sandbring, My daughter recently applied to UKY. She did not want to go far from home but all of a sudden decided she liked UKY and USC. It was too late for her to apply to USC being it was a few weeks ago so she just applied to UKY. Is you daughter happy at UKY? Mine applied for nursing and they seem to have excellent NCFLEX pass rates so I let her apply. We are from New York so I really do not know much about the school. If you can tell me about the school and if your daughter is happy there - I would appreciate it!

@gators19, I’m not sure @sandybring has ever returned to CC since there was only that one post.
You might want to try visiting the UK forum and asking for some feedback there. I recommend starting a new thread and seeing what happens. Not sure how active it is, but I’m guessing you’ll get some feedback there: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-kentucky/
Lexington KY is a very nice town, and a little more “cosmopolitan” than the rest of Kentucky. It’s very close to Louisville, as well, another nice town. I don’t think she’d be singled out for being Jewish.
Remember, college students and those on a college campus and college town tend to be more open-minded…
UK is supposed to have a very good Honors program, if she’s eligible for that (sounds like she is).
I don’t know about the Jewish population at UK, but I know Indiana has a sizable Jewish contingent. She wouldn’t be alone there.
If she can go to UK for a lot cheaper, though, I’d pick UK, unless you have money to burn, or she wants to take some obscure language at IU… And southern Indiana is not that far removed from KY.
Aw, didn’t realize this post was so old. Sorry.
@LucieTheLakie - Thank you!
UK has recently opened a Chabad! Very exciting becuase my old Sunday school teacher started it! Great people!!
there used to be A Jewsih frat ZBT and sorority ZTA but when the Greeks changed their admission policies to allow Jews to join they were no longer needed . UK is far far along with diversity and you will find it is a beautiful campus with a lit of really nice students who could care less about your race of religion.
Honors programs is tops as are the six thousand new modern dorm rooms built in the last two years under President Capiluto . You should check it out if you want a place where people will judge you by who you are.
If however , restricting your social experiences to mostly Jewish students is important to you it may not be a good option.
I do think that she would stick out here on campus… Admittedly it is not very diverse, I’m from Michigan (about 1/2 hour away from U-M Ann Arbor actually) However, campus really does feel like home once you get used to it.
