What's a not terrible major for someone who has fallen in love with public speaking?

I like public speaking. I mean, I REALLY like it. It is the only thing I would even possibly use the word "passionate" for. I don't want to be an actor or a salesman, but a career where I give speeches or giving presentations for people that have great ideas but hate being in the public eye sounds really exciting. I'm very good a it (I've won several awards, once had someone compare me to Oprah, am VP of my college's honor society), and it's the only activity that doesn't sound like a complete chore to me.

I'm currently working towards a compsci major, solely because it will likely lead to a lucrative lifestyle and there is absolutely nothing else that I could see putting thousands upon thousands of dollars in for a degree.

Is there a way/major/area/whatever I could do to get into this career path? What I've mainly read implies that people get those jobs by chance, and a speech/communications major is a very poor idea. Of course, I involve my self in extracurricular stuff to indulge myself in my hobby, but none of it looks like it would directly lead me to a career in that field.

Rhetoric would be an ideal major. While most of the rhetoric majors I know go into law or politics a few have gone into public relations and one works in television.

Hmmm… Maybe good career paths would be those of publicists, public relations representatives, or company spokespersons? There are also motivational speakers and life coaches. If that’s the case, the only majors I could see that would apply would be Communications or Public Relations, with a focus on Marketing, or Psychology for the latter two. You could also be a professional in another field who gives presentations to schools or in the community. I don’t think there is any degree necessary for that per se (it would be all about building a reputation), but you could reach out to different venues or a speakers’ association.

I personally think any major would do. Remember, opportunities are everywhere and its up to you to find it. If it were for me, First, I would join toastmasters and go into their competitions and to build up your competency and reputation. Then what I would do is to join a professional organization (if you are compsci you may want to join startup groups)and just offer to coordinate or mc at events.

The more you expose yourself the more chances you get and then you may end up getting a career as public speaker for your industry.

hope this helps.

I think public relations would be a great choice if you have no desire to be in the public eye. If you were perhaps reconsidering the ‘public eye’ so to speak, I would say you should give broadcasting a try. Speaking as someone in the same situation (I do competitive speech in college), I have a major in political science and a minor in communication. Law school wouldn’t be a bad consideration for you if you’re up for it. Just some thoughts!

International relations? If you have any interest in politics/global cooperation.

Double major your compsci with communications
