What's a reach/match/safety with these SAT/ACT scores?

Rice has a scholarship specifically to attract diverse applicants. I think your son would be very likely to receive that one as a Hispanic from Florida. It is for a substantial amount, 8 or 12 K/yr if I remember correctly.

Since this student's SAT scores fall almost exactly at Rice's 50 percentile, I'm wondering why would he be eligible for an 8K - 12K scholarship? I'd presume that even with a "diversity" scholarship (and I suspect Hispanic might not be very diverse in Texas, but I really have no idea) the expectation would be that they are near the top of the applicants. How does that work?

Rice's Trustee Diversity Scholarship is listed as

Students whose diverse life experiences and contributions to diverse groups distinguish them within the context of the admitted applicants

Based on this description, I didn't think SAT scores were all that important for this particular scholarship. It is actually for 10-13.5 K/yr. Also, Hispanics make up 11% as of 2004, as opposed to 15% Asian and 55% white. I imagine being Hispanic does give an admissions boost at Rice.

I have to agree with weenie about the OP's sons prospects of getting a Trustee Diversity Scholarship at Rice. My D is Latina and very interested in Rice so I keep pretty close track to what's happening there. The OP's SAT score of 1330 (M&V) is actually at the 25th percentile for Rice. Last year the three applicants on the Rice board that reported getting the TD scholarship had SAT scores of 1430, 1450 & 1450. While I do think (and hope) that Rice is looking for Latinos to increase their diversity and that the TD scholarship is not strictly numbers based, I think it would be misleading to say that the OP's son is "very likely to receive" a merit scholarship.

From entomom: "The OP's SAT score of 1330 (M&V) is actually at the 25th percentile for Rice. "

After looking at the chart I'm wondering if that is the bottom 25%? Sorry I'm confused about how they talk about that.

I was looking at this merit stuff about Rice because it's a school I might consider for son #2 (who is not a diversity candidate unless they count very tall). And now that I see Trustee's is their top scholarship I am even more skeptical about attainablility on that one...

(sorry for the partial hijack on the thread)

weenie, the stats I have are from PR, they show 1330 - 1540 as the 25-75% range for Rice, so yes, it would be the bottom 25%. Also, there are two Trustee scholarships, Distinguished Scholar and Diversity Scholar, both giving the same amount of money. The one I talked about above is for Diversity. Patsmom may be interested to know that two students were Latino and one was African American, so Rice is interested in attracting Latinos even though it's in Tejas.

HWS offers great merit aid and is a wonderful college, albeit rural--but so is Dension. The Trustee Scholarships are 19k
