what's college do i have to choose and please give the explanation

hey guys, my name is Darren. i'm 15 and i'm from indonesia and i really want to go to U.S for my college. and i know it's seems to early for me but this is just for my preparation only. and i like science. so probably i will choose chemistry for my college major. because i want to be scientist that work in the laboratory. but i also want to be a petroleum engineering so what you all guys can give a suggestion for me?? what's more good for me and why? and also the last question that i want to ask you guys is what college should i go to and why??? how about stanford that's the best college ever right??? thank you for your attention i hope you all guys can see this and give me a suggestion.

You just need to do a lot of learning and reading on your own right now. Learn about studying chemistry and what you can do with it. Studying petroleum engineering is an entirely different track, not every uni offers that study so if you choose that track you will want to do a search of colleges offering that major. It pretty much doesn’t matter which you pick. They all offer the same program of study.

There are about 3,500 colleges and universities here. And there really isn’t one that is considered ‘the best’. But if there are ‘the best’ ones, then everyone wants to go, right? So there are extremely difficult to get into, and more so for international students, they often need to be the best in their country academically or have some really fantastic accomplishment. There are some guidebooks here that students use that list about 350 colleges and give an idea of the type of school it is.

It is not reasonable to pick colleges without having an idea of your qualifications. Most people here will pick which to apply to in their junior year or the summer after. They will know their gpa and test scores so they can get an idea if it is likely they will get in, or a long shot or just impossible.

Another major consideration is costs.

First, talk to your parents about how much they will pay for college. Most intls have to pay for their education here in the US.

There are a small number of schools that meet need for int’ls. Those are the hardest to get into, and some (like Stanford) are need-aware for intls (this means that they look to see how much money an intl needs before deciding acceptance.)

There are some schools that give merit scholarships to intls for high stats.

Be sure to have the best grades and best test scores you can.

thanks for the info guys. it’s really help me

i just want to ask you guys, what’s major do you guys pick?
and from now on i’ll try my best. and after i graduated from my senior high school.
i’ll try to consult with U.S embassy so maybe, they can find me a college that want to accepted me

Uhh the embassy can’t tell you which colleges will accept you…only the colleges themselves can, after you apply. Come back at the end of your junior year with grades/test scores/etc. so we can guide you to colleges where you’ll be likely to be accepted. No school’s a guarantee for anyone (except those with auto-admit policies), but there are some where you’ll have better chances (which is why applicants create a list of reaches/matches/safeties). Also, college app season in the US begins the summer before senior year, so waiting after senior year would be too late!

Will you need financial aid? How much can your parents pay?
Petroleum Engineering has a guaranteed career path but most schools that offer that degree only offer merit aid, meaning you’d need to get very high SAT or ACT scores.
You could buy Insider’s Guide to the Colleges, or Princeton review’s best colleges, or Fiske Guide, and start reading.
Excellent colleges for Petroleum Engineering tend to be in the South - Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana - plus Marietta College (which is in the North).
You need to start thinking about colleges soon, but choosing your major can wait. You’d have to take the tests during your junior year, prepare your college list during the summer before senior year, and apply during the Fall of Senior Year.

Do not wait until senior year unless you want to take a year off. You need to apply a year in advance. Just spend some time learning about colleges in the US. Don’t neglect your home possibilities.

When your are a Juror, contact Education USA for assistance. Not the embassy. You can review this site now.

thank you guys for your info :))

and also i need financial aid, so what would i do to get that?

Only very few colleges offer financial aid to international students; those colleges are the most selective/toughest to get into/reaches for everyone. There are plenty of less selective schools which offer merit aid for all students, whether domestic or international. However, until you have stats/test scores available, we can’t tell if you’d qualify for them.

here’re some lists of schools that offer aid to internationals:
