^^agreed. I'm from the backwoods of Upstate NY....Ithaca is no country setting :-)

so are you from like Fulton or something?

cornell has so many other things to do other than go to frat parties. there are so many concerts and other shows. just this year, i went to see stephen colbert, young joc, tpain, im [probably] going to OAR, etc. plus theres slope day. yes, the greek scene is pretty dominant but i know people who arent in sororities and frats who are having just as much fun

plus, why are you worryng about an INTERNSHIP during your FRESHMAN year during the school year? no one is going to hire you straight out of high school, and it would be better to just focus on school when you are adapting to college instead of having to worry about school AND a job

as far as cornell being in the middle of nowhere...it honestly isnt that bad. growing up 20 minutes outside of a major US city...it took maybe a week or so to adjust. but it is so much fun going into collegetown and the commons are cool too. you just have to give ithaca a chance. if a city girl like me can, so can you. trust me

haha....no...worse than Fulton...I think :-)

damn ... that's pretty hick.

haha...yes it is....but I am proud to have all of my teeth, not be the product of inbreeding and (almost!) a recipient of a Cornell degree.

yeah i'm considering cornell and i havent visited before so i really have no idea what it's like, but i just dont want a boring place. i want to have lots of fun

Cornell and Ithaca certainly aren't boring...I promise you that.

you WILL have lots of fun. pretty much guaranteed as soon as you arrive on campus

Okay, so the internship talk aside, I honestly think most people would be HAPPIER at Cornell. I'm not saying they'll learn more (though they might), or that they'll have more career opportunities, but their quality of life will probably be better. I have a friend who is a freshman at UChicago, and all my friends (they know him better) say all he does is study ALL day, not just because that's "all he has time for", but because that's what he says people do there. To be quite honest, the last time I saw him, his social skills seemed to be severely impaired from the lack of human interaction. I'm not trying to make this some pro-Cornell propoganda, but that's really what I've heard about it. Also, UChicago isn't on the best side of town. He once had to stay in his dorm room because there was some dangerous situation down the street (and apparently Thanksgiving weekend 2 or 3 people got murdered in that area). And sure, it's in a city, but that doesn't mean everything's convenient. He says he has to go across town just for things like haircuts (because the surrounding area is not very hospitable to all demographics of people). In short, UChicago might have awesome academics, but one just probably would not be as happy there as they would be at Cornell unless they really didn't want to make good old fashion carefree memories (not in the sense that you'll have loads of free time, but in the sense that you'll be doing amazingly memorable things in an amazingly memorable place).

While Chicago is a great city, peeople89 is correct--it's not on the best side of town and it is a bit of an island, surrounded by some pretty dicey areas. Some of you guys make Cornell out to be out in the sticks somewhere. It is a really vibrant, college town with a progressive population. It's not going to offer you everything that Chicago has to offer but it's a wonderful place nonetheless. I attended Cornell and worked at the University of Chicago and I'd choose Cornell hands down anytime as a place to be a student.

where would you get a haircut at cornell and would being in a single put you at a disadvantage in making friends?

laurstar (lauren) i'm not biased! i formed my opinion after living here...its not at all biased. And in the interest of full disclosure, if being a transfer applicant out of cornell counts as a bias...well there you have it. But I don't think that's a bias...its a result of my honest opinion after living here. Anyway I applied ED to Cornell (as you know)...so I was never unhappy about going to Cornell and I was never sour about anything. I have friends here, and Cornell never did me wrong in any way. My professors have been fabulous and most of my classes have been good. My grades are high and I'm doing well. So my opinion is based on experience....not bias. And if the original poster of this thread is already concerned about "where are towns" and "how rural is it"...and we both happen to be interested in the same major...there's a good chance he/she will feel the same way I do. In many ways, I love cornell. But I definitey don't love ithaca.

And about the internship thing. No, its not a necessity to have an internship as a freshman, obviously. But if its something that 's important to the poster...whos to judge? Maybe he/she is pretty motivated and wants an internship. And for people our age interested in government, you can get an internship at this age. True you'll be someone's coffee b*tch, but that's to be expected. Doesn't make it a bad idea for a college freshman to be interested in an internship.

oh and campus videos on theu.com for cornell seem to be mostly accurate...except for the girl who said most people party 3 nights a week lol. but definitely worth looking at for those of you trying to decide.

Elgguj, where did you transfer to?

i wish i knew! i havent gotten any of my transfer decisions yet. but i applied to a range of schools so hopefully im safe...i applied to all the D.C. schools

why are you transferring out? like, was there one thing that you just hated about cornell? or is it because of homesickness? weather?.....whats the #1 reason?

now im really curious...give me all the details! Pm me if its personal or if you want to write an essay haha

oh hey...haha i didn't realize you responded to me on the thread. well anyway I PMed you back...but for those reading the boards...you hit it on the head with boringness and isolation
